Commercial Description:
Pils, Carapils, and wheat malts, Belgian candi sugar
Magnum and Styrian Goldings Hops
This beer is brewed in the Belgian Saison style (country farm house ale). A potent yet delicate ale, brewed with a unique Belgian yeast which develops a spicy, fruity flavor. Enormously complex. Available from May to around August.

Tap at BCTC 2009. Obviously drank for the Saison tick- no denying it. Pours a hazy dull deep gold- light copper with a fluffy sticky off white head- and some lace. Aroma is actually fairly sweet from the start, a bit harsh hay and straw- with sharp toffee and light butterscotch caramel hints, hay phenolic, earth, and a bit harsh. Flavoor is a bit sweet as well- almsot syrupy at times, harsh green phenols, big bready yeast- too much so, and not saison-like enough- just belgiany with too much goiung on, and not dry at all- just harsh and a bit astringent with too much residual sweetness. Meh.

This is the 09 RSAN that I am basing this upon. The 08 was near perfect, lacking the slight vinegary mouthfeel that becomes more present when you session this beer. The finish is also decidedly different from years past, in which the subtle hop presence stayed around past the usual Saison accents of citrus, hay and wildflower. This years brew has a much shorter finish with the Belgian yeasty flavor the last to go. Despite my preference for last year’s, this is still one of America’s best approximations of a Saison (with Hennepin, Golden Cap and Grassroots all fine additions to this type as well). This is one of those beers I truly look forward to and I truly recommend it to fans of the style.

330 ML bottle in the USA. Unusual beer reminds me of an Orval and almost as good. Fantastic stuff and very complex. Will have again.

Golden pour with small head. Some hints of caramel and spice in aroma, flavor is spicy and hoppy and watery. Very metallic in the finish which did not help at all.

From Taco Mac in Atlanta. Gold pour. Light head. Caramel malt and floral hops. No real funk here, maybe a hint of lemony tartness on the nose. Flavor is a bit on the sweet side and has a slight hop bite at the end...saison? Hmmm, not so sure here.

Location: Not my first trial of this one, but the rating is from a 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 7/25/09

Aroma: Sugar, yeast, spice, fruit, clove
Appearance: Mostly clear yellow-orange color, thin white head
Flavor: Malty sweetness, light spice, hops in the finish
Palate: Light to medium body
Overall Impression: A decent beer, I didn’t get a ton out of this beer, but it was certainly passable.

Bottle. Pours a golden body with small white head. The aroma is sweet, farmhouse funk, and spice. The taste is extremely smooth, with notes of fruit, wheat, yeast, etc.
