This was a good one. Just the right amount of bitter/sweet, without overdoing it. Coast range is making some fine brews. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2005 (22 oz bottle: $3.49 at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) So, I really like the beers Coast Range makes for their own label, but I’m finding that they all have a similar malt bill, at least in how it tastes. It’s very grainy and fairly sweet, and even for this seasonal IPA, the grainy maltiness is quite prominent. It also has a pretty obvious saltiness to me. Hops has presence for sure, and it’s mildly grapefruity, but it’s only moderately bitter, and barely able to balance the strong graininess. Mind you, I’m not complaining or trashing this beer, I’m thoroughly enjoying how tasty this is, it’s just not a typical West Coast IPA. Likewise, the nose is extremely grainy, with earth and pine needles not too far behind. Medium bodied, it has the most chalky mouthfeel I can recall in a beer, especially in the finish. Slightly hazy, light amber in color, and topped by a small, off-white head that settles out to a thin, but complete layer. Lacing is negligible. I have to admit, my first taste and whiff had me wrinkling my brow, wondering if the beer was spoiled or something, but it didn’t take long for me to see the error of my initial judgment. Very tasty, very enjoyable, and nicely balanced. Tomorrow, I’m gonna go clean out all the remaining bottles at BevMo. SuIIy (1496), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 5, 2006 22oz bottle from Darkelf. Pours a light oraneg color with a foamy white head. Nose is grapefruit and citrus hops. Taste is citrusy hops, light lemony flavors, sweet caramel malt is faint in the backround. Finishes with anice biiterness and a sticky palate. trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 12, 2005 A differnt IPA from anything I’ve tried. Looks and smells like any other, but the taste is what differentiates this one. Good balance of hops and malt, but with an overtone of peat and pine. Almost a smoked malt flavor, but in IPA form. Very enjoyable. mjg74 (2000), La Mesa, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 21, 2006 Bottled. Pours a medium brownish/orange color with a little red around the edges. English smelling hops right up front with that sweet caramel like aroma. Hoppy and bitter right up front with a little hint of sweetness. Good malt balance with moderate bitterness. This stuff is pretty good, I’m surprised it is rated less than a 3. elnadeau (786), Laguna Niguel, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 6, 2006 Pours a silty brown-orange, aroma is slightly sour citrus and malt. Flavor is grainy citrus malt with some earthy hop flavors, finish is bitter but not over the top. I have had some APA’s that were this hoppy. Not bad, drinkable but not an IPA I would look for again. bb (2941), Martinez, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Aug 8, 2005 Bottle. Rich amber beer with an off-white head. Creamy malts and British hops in the aroma. Some citrus flavors to go with grassy/floral hops that’s very balanced. Not overly bitter. Cross between a British and American IPA without making up it’s mind - more hop flavor than a pale ale. The more I drank, the more I liked. Easy drinking. hopscotch (5549), Vero Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 19, 2006 Bottle... Hazy, orange ale with a small, frothy, off-white head. Decent retention. The fruity, perfumey aroma is of tea, apricot, pink grapefruit and very light pine. Moderately bitter flavor with lots of grapefruit, a little toffee and a dash of sea salt. Medium-bodied and very dry with lively carbonation. Finishes crisp. Pretty good English IPA. Thanks to DarkElf for including this beer in our trade.
