Commercial Description:
Originating with small craft brewers, brown ales became popular in England. They created this amber colored ale for its nutty toffee and caramel notes and a soft, smooth finish. This new brew of choice became known as Brown Ale. These ales were traditionally served draught style in neighborhood pubs with a generous froth spilling over the top of the pint glass. You'll discover that authentic Pub Pint taste and character thanks to our Colonial Pub Pint System. Millions of tiny bubbles release when you jopen a pint to give your beer a creamy head and smooth pub finish ... the way Pub Pints havae been enjoyed for generations. Can poured a clear brown with a small lasting light tan head. Aromas of carmel. chocolate, light fruitiness and a hint of nuts. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of carmel and light fruitiness with a crisp clean finish. A verey disapointing beer!

22-May-07 (16 oz can: Purchased at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) I was prepared to say, "This isn’t THAT bad," but after just one sip, yes, it really is that bad. When first taking each sip, the beer is lightly sweet, fairly sugary, caramely and somewhat toasty, certainly not great quality here, but its drinkable I suppose. But as soon as I swallow, those flavors disappear and the mediocrity take a hard nosedive. The palate-torturing aftertaste is metallic, papery and tart and leaves me with cottonmouth. Light-medium bodied, mostly an impression created by the sugar, finishing thin and watery. Brown sugar, acidic earth and sauerkraut in the nose. Amber-brown in color with only a slight haziness. Small, light-tan head fades to a small ring, leaving no lacing. Pretty awful stuff, especially the atrocious aftertaste which is one of the worst I can remember.

It’s been a while since I’ve been Glueked, and this one surprized me by being fairly drinkable. From thew can it pours a clear orangeish brown with a creamy, tall beige head... which unfortunately reduces to a film within two minutes. It’s got a sweet aroma, worty malt smells with caramel and a bit of chocolate. But it has no balance in the flavor, the sweetness getting to be a bit too much for me by the end of the glass. But for a Gluek, that ain’t bad.

Poured VERY dark for a brown ale. Dark brown-red. The head was short but rather thick. Smells like a Jack and Coke. I suppose that’d be tons of malt and caramel with a bitter note. Amazingly bad flavor. This makes the Gluek Honey-Bock taste like Westvleteren. Tastes like a Bit-O-Honey picked up out of a puddle of puke and peanut shells at a bar. My colonial pint breakdown: pale ale is drinkable; you may tolerate (barely) the hefeweizen; avoid the brown ale with your life.

Dark copper to umber color with a small head that settles quickly to a thin lid of light tan bubbles. Somewhat lactic caramel aromas. Some lightly toasted grain and lightly rancid nut scents as well. Flavors of brown sugar and caramel. Some whole grain bread flavors as well. Flavors are better than the aromas, but that did not take much.

I’m not a big brown ale fan, but I’m surprised to see this beer rated as it is here as I thought it was surprisingly good. Perhaps my expectation was just too low based on the fact that this beer comes in a can, was cheap, and because I’d never heard of it before. Still, I found it be an enjoyable but no-frills brown ale. And I’m not a huge brown ale fan. The beer pours a hazy brown with less than expected head formation. Aroma was somewhat toffee-ish, and flavor was sweetly malty but not over-the-top for my somewhat limited malty sweetness tolerance, which I appreciated. Mouthfeel was a bit watery, but not bad. All-in-all, I rather enjoyed it. I bought this beer after seeing it on the "just in" shelf at Three Cellars liquor in Franklin, WI.

Pint can, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Watery brown colour, malt aroma, sweet flavor, overly sweet as mentioned by other viewers, though not terrible.
