This classic porter is based on a British ale brewery’s recipe dating to 1859. Smoky and fruity, this is the beer that powered the Industrial Revolution. Brewed with English East Kent Goldings hops for true British character. Only available on draft.

On Tap at the Columbus Brewing Co, Terminal B, Columbus Airport, Ohio 28/09/2009 Roast aroma. Beige head. Black very smooth and a little rich on the palate. Fruity with a crisp and slightly bitter coffee roast finish.

Draft at brewpub. Black color with an average creamy light brown head that diminished slowly and produced good lacing. Moderate sweet toasted malt aroma. Medium body. Medium sweet toasted malt and fruit flavor with an average finish.

Draft 4 oz sample at the brewpub, 10/23/06: Pitch black with the barest of smoky coffee aromas. Not much to this one flavor-wise, pretty shallow. Just a kiss of sour-smoke, burnt toast. Least favorite here.

I had this at O’Shaughnessy’s Public House in the Arena District here in Columbus under the moniker "O’Shaughnessy’sDam Good Porter". The waiter told us it was brewed exclusively for O’Shaughnessy’s by CBC but I can’t imagine it being a different brew than the 1859 Porter. Either way this is a great Porter. I had to wait for it to warm a bit as it was served too cold but it was worth it. Pours an oily black color with a very thin head. Nice roasted coffee aroma. Slightly creamy flavor consisting of coffee (again) with a nice toasty finish. This is definitely one to get again.

Light, light porter aroma with some fruit. Dark and transparent with virtually no head. A very mellow beer with some earthy/veggie (potato) notes. Indistinct, but balanced and easily drinkable for the porter novice. Lightish body, but smooth.

A good light roasty aroma. This is a simple porter, a bit roasty, not heavy. Isn’t sweet. A pretty unassuming but drinkable beer.

I had this at O’Shaughnessy’s Public House under the name O’Shaughnessy’s Dam Good Porter. Pours black with a mocha head that fades pretty quick. Nice aroma of coffee, and sweet milk chocolate. Also lots of roasty notes. A real delight to the nose. Flavor is no disappointment either. This is a nice blend of chocolate sweetness and coffee bitters. Very robust and flavorful. Full mouthfeel with not too much carbonation. Very creamy and delicious.. This is a very nice porter and worthy of the name Dam Good Porter!

7/13/2009: Columbus 1859 Porter is a really nicely done, authentic robust porter. The aroma and flavor both have lots of darkly roasted grain and dark chocolate. There is some additional characteristics in the flavor including coffee, some slight mineral-like quality, and cocoa finish. The beer is very dark brown with a frothy, lasting tan head that leaves copious amounts of foamy lacing on the glass. This beer is also medium-bodied and smooth, but a touch more body/heft would have been appreciated. Nonetheless, this was a tasty, sessionable porter.

Pint (draught) at Buffalo Wild Wings in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2009. Rating #27 for this beer.
