Pours an almost black body with a small fizzy quickly fading light brown head. Some light lacing remained. The nose is a combo of roast, licorice, brown sugar, and chocolate. The flavor is slightly lactic with a good dose of and almost powdered sugar sweetness overlying a sharp roasted and burnt malt base. Finishes with a good dose of chalky and bitter roasted barley. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slight clingyness that makes the finish last forever. A little too much fizzy carbonation going on for me. Overall, an enjoyable enough beer that I haven’t revisited for many years. I do remember it being a little fuller and with a little more depth, but then that could just be my tastes and expectations have changed too. onlyrocknroll (220), Cork, Ireland

Light malty aroma with a slight trace of chocolate. Quite malty, roasted flavours which gain intensity towards the quite dry finish. Medium to full body. A fine beer. Deep brown, almost black, with a layer of leathery tan that lingers tenaciously. The raisin and plum smell of molasses with a nice buttery walnut note. Fine textured port-like dry roast flavor. Medium to light bodied in a way that keeps it very refreshing in a surprising sort of way. Dry earthy finish. A proper FES indeed. Angeloregon (2025), Portland, Oregon, USA
