It smells of sweet toffee/caramel malt and perhaps jjust a touch of chocolate malt. The flavor is the same, starts out quite sweet with roasty notes and has just enough bitterness to clean up the sweetness. It seems a touch overcarbonated with a thin body. Body is dark brown, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. Another crapper from Cooper. Watery, sour, fizzy, bland, boring...back to the loch with you, Nessie! jtw (943), farmington, Michigan, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 7, 2004 brown ale? more like a porter. but it’s a very straightforward brew. darker than a brown, with a whitish head. not overly complex, but very drinkable. lots of coffee with some residual sweetness. good but too expensive for what it is, here in the states. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 27, 2004 Aroma: somewhat reminiscent of the Sparkling Ale with the maltiness and yeastiness but also had hints of carbonised barley. Dark brown with a smallish head that quickly dissipated. Flavour was a bit sweet bready followed by some roastiness that gave way to a soda watery finish. This was ok but reading the commercial description I would have to say it’s more a Frankenstein beer than a clever combination. spikee (96), Providence, Rhode Island, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Oct 25, 2004 Slightly sweet nose, with a touch of honey. Deep brown color with a light, almost nonexistent head. Quick stab of vanilla and coffee flavors that fades even quicker with a smooth, watery finish. Leaves me wanting a bit more ... a bit more flavor, a bit more complexity. Bottom line: uninspiring, even boring. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Oct 1, 2004 deep brown color, very thin beige head, well carbonated. nose has a medium chocolatey nuttiness. flavor is a rather bland combo of slight roastiness and nuttiness with a dry and slightly cardboardy finish. does have SOME decent aromas and flavors, just a little too light in body for my tastes and compared to some other examples of the style (e.g. DFH Indian Brown). | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Sep 27, 2004 Very, very fizzy. More carbonated than soda. Dark maroon color. Taste of some molassis and roast, but that’s it. Plain. ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Sep 5, 2004 Typical nose of a brown ale: maple, vanilla, some cream. Fizzy and not a very deep flavor profile... fizzy toasted nuts and bread crust. Pancakes and milk. Not exciting at all.
