No lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and very faint roasting coffee. Flavour was similar with some spicey notes and noticable alcohol presence. Let down by being a bit watery, otherwise a pleasant but not unique little beer. Leans towards being a Porter. flutetokill (515), Fresno, California, USA

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jun 26, 2004 Medium brown color, translucent, with a cola-like off-white head. The aroma was oddly lagerish...vomit tones kerpt in every once in awhile...some chocolate, and roasted nut also. The flavor was sweet...chocolate, cola, nutty tones. Very light, watery feel. Blah. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jun 16, 2004 Eclipse brown color. Medium white foamy head. Aroma is malty and sweet. A medium bodied “Brown Ale”. Malts are nutty and sweet. Hops are pretty much non-existent. Kind of watery and not very malty. It has some cola like qualities, most noticeably in the carbonation and aftertaste. All of the other beers from Cooper’s have been drinkable except this one is not. I would not say avoid at all costs, but unless you are looking for a rating I would avoid this one. Mouthfeel is watery. Finish is crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with a touch of caramel sweetness. mullet (798), Melbourne, Australia
| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | May 29, 2004 Clear, almost black colour with red highlights and chunks of yeast. Pretty good, white head. Grainy dark malt aroma which is rather faint, I can’t really detect any Coopers yeast character. Dark malt flavour becomes more apparent as the beer warms but it’s very faint regardless. Initially I thought this was their Pale Ale with food colouring, but perhaps not. No real malt character besides the toasty dark malts, pretty watery flavour with no real bitterness but a subtle acidity. Considering how big their Stout tastes I’m surprised this is so watery. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | May 3, 2004 Bottled, at the Australian Hotel, Sydney. Golden brown with large spherical bubbles rising to the top. Dark vinous aroma that smells like red that’s left in a opened bottle for 2 days. Bitter, with slight and I stress only slight, roasted malt flavour. Overall feels the beer feels thin. This beer forces the question… has Coopers sold out or have they just been past by better brewers. gerod42 (6), Melbourne, Arizona, Australia does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 23, 2004 Updated: May 5, 2004I have to agree with JHills. This dark ale doesn't have any harsh , Full flavored bad tastes. It Reminds me of the German Dunkle style. Clean and Crisp. The Aroma is ver natural with no chemical overtones. Very natural. Strong Recommend!!!
