Initially sweet palate, burnt sugar, dark malt, slightly bitter finish. I didn’t find the licorice elements that some of the others did. Overall very enjoyable, and superior to their "regular" old stout. beeryum (652), Norcross, Georgia, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 9, 2005 Intriguing aged stout. Judging by the comments here, the carbonation varies considerably because this sample was disconcertingly fizzy for a stout. It poured thin-looking and excessively bubbly, but settled into something dark, still and much more typical of the style. The pillowy 1.5cm tan head quickly receded but left some lace. However, the aroma compensates. It’s rich and raisiny, with licorice notes, dry coffee powder and dark rum-like alcohol. Aroma suggests it’s at the drier end of the scale. At room temperature, the mouthfeel is initially full and creamy, with some carbonated zing at the back of the throat and a slow burn down in the stomach. However, this is way too fizzy in the mouth for the style. Dark malts dominate the flavour profile, with the anticipated stout characteristics of bitter chocolate, espresso, dried fruit and ashes. The finish is as dry as a billabong in drought and pleasingly bitter. Will have to re-sample to see if the carbonation issue was a one-off. Smells a bit chocolatey/coffee-like. Flavor is similar with hints of dark fruit, chocolate, coffee and roasty bitterness. Full-bodied and smooth mouthfeel with low carbonation. jbrus (4894), Delft, Netherlands
