Jet black with a dark brown scummy head. No/low carbonation makes for easy drink. Strong liquorice toasted malt flavour. Deep and wide in flavour the beer has silky smooth mouth feel and long palate. bfgill (120), Tasmania, Australia

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Sep 20, 2003 nice dark roast malt flavour and high alochol content make this a big stout. Nice head and a liquorice aftertaste make this quite a good stout. That said though, it is not quite exceptional. Southwark is a nicer stout for the aussie drinkers. Fez (17), Australia

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 6, 2003 Updated: Jan 11, 2005The colour is of charcoal very dark and deep, very little head if any at all. The aromas I got was of burnt caramel and also coffee. Appearance to me was flat and dark and the taste was smooth with hints of liquorice although a short finish. Re-Rate 11/1/05 Still thought this is a good beer. Head was much better, light brown in colour though no lacing, toasted aroma, taste was no different but I appreciate it more. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 15, 2003 After the initial impact of the chocolate malt and low hop note I consider this to be a clearly more than an acceptable beer. I agree that it is porterish in style but for the the non dark beer drinker it is not as difficult to appreciate as some other stouts. Not sure about complaints regarding the body, it has a good roll in the mouth and feels smoooooth going down. kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 10, 2003 Pours very dark brown/almost black with typical coopers short lasted brown-beige head. So much aroma for a stout. Dark fruit, roasted grains, coffee, its all in there. Very strong taste, though suprisingly thin body. As mentioned by others, very porter-like. Tastes of chocolate/coffee with a lovely sweetness well balanced with bitter. Hint of liquorice taste in the mouth too. Lovely drop IMO. Could do with a bit more body though.
