Commercial Description:
Coors Brewing Company celebrates the holidays with Winterfest - the nation's longest-running seasonal brew. Brewed once a year, in celebration of the season, Winterfest is a handcrafted brew that has earned Coors much recognition. Prior to its broader availability, Winterfest was enjoyed almost exclusively by the Coors family, company employees, and their friends. In 1986, Coors expanded the tradition of Winterfest to include the entire state of Colorado. The response was so enthusiastic that, every year since, Coors has offered the special winter brew in limited quantities and packages. Winterfest is available on draught and in six-pack longneck bottles, from early November through January, depending on how long supplies last. Winterfest is the perfect beer to toast a new season or a new year. 190 calories per 12-ounce serving and 5.6% alcohol by volume.

Sampled at Broudy’s Holiday Beerfest Jacksonville, FL 12/2/2006. This appears to be another case of a macro brewer trying to break out with a worthwile offering. Though it only rises to mediocre in the craft brew realm, its light years ahead of everything else produced at Coors. Nice copper hue and thin white head. Body is medium, not at all like the typical Coors seltzer-water. Some caramel and malt and a few rough edges, but still a drinkable amber.

Bottle... Clear amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The nose is loaded with caramel and toasty notes. The flavor is all caramel and unfermentable sugar. A malt-bomb for sure, but in a bad way. Cloyingly sweet. At only 5.6% abv, I can only assume they forgot to throw any hops into the boil. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Crisp, caramelly-sweet finish. I’m a total malt head, but this is way too sweet.

Pours a clear copper, with a thin head that holds for a minute. More malt than hops in the aroma. Medium body and relatively flavorless. Good effort for a major brewer. But, spring for some better hops.

Bottle. Pours a classic amber, glassy and classy. Weak malt aroma with a slight banana hint. Grassy malt with a coppery hops finish. Watery mouthfeel, but it spreads the flavors. Not bad for Coors, but it still can’t hold the snot rag of most micro brews put out at this time of year.

This is what happens when a macro starts to branch out. Aftertaste is like dirt. LIttle to no aroma, though its supposed to have spices and nutmeg, all I smelled was bread. Avoid, I would rather have a Coors light than this offering. Only redeeming quality is the color, which is a rich deep rust.

Copper body with a little less than a finger of offwhite head. Smells like caramel malt, kind of toasty. Tastes caramel malty. Medium-bodied. Actually a pretty decent little beer. Tastes like a craft beer. Reminds me in some ways of Ayinger Oktoberfest-Marzen. I can see myself getting this one again. Kudos, Coors! (never thought I’d say that)

Fairly light, fruity, buttery/greasy aroma. Festive label, clear woody brown, beady tan head. Toasted sunflower seeds, moderate hopping. A mostly-dry, somewhat lagerish malt silhouette, but there were some bock-ish, dark syrup notes in there. Body is slightly heavier than medium. Slight metallic twinge on the toasty cereal backend. I suspect that this would have done better in this audience if the tasting was done blind and without a Coors label. Overall, this wouldn’t be a bad choice if you were faced with a wall of macros at the grocery.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Half-Time Liquors - 12 oz. bottle. Pours a pleasant dark copper color with a firm and fluffy off-white head. Aroma has hints of fresh lake water with a smidgen of wet metal - not a strong point in this one. Flavor has some caramel notes with some nuttiness and faint chocolate. Finsisheds with a spicy zing. Mouthfeel is decently thick. Overall, not bad.
