Commercial Description:
American Pale Ale is pale copper in color with a medium-light body. Brewed with five different hop varieties, its aroma is very floral and inviting. The mildly malty flavor is nicely rounded by its complex hoppy finish.

draught. Nice deep red hue, the head fades away after a few moments. The aroma is thin, but there’s a bit of grapefruit and sweet malt present. This isn’t super hoppy, though a bit biting. A bit of citrusy sweetness is there. This just needs better and more hop flavor. Not a great rendition of the style, it reminds me more of an American amber.

On tap. Pours a stark, clear amber with a frothy head. I take a whiff. . .what’s going on here? Strong berries accompany the defined hoppiness. Y’know, it’s pretty decent. The flavor again has a berry sweetness with biscuity character that really brings an American-hopped amber ale to mind. Lots of grapefruit, stinging pine, lemon zest, and light wood is in the flavor as well. This is pretty good beverage.

2005 GCBC. Amber pour and clear. Some toasty malt aroma and flavor, with some kind of woody / almost dirty hops. A decent ale, but I felt it was missing the appropriate hop profile for an APA. Or maybe the hops were off with the batch I sampled.

2005 GCBC. Slightly hazed amber color. Fruity aroma with light hop. Flavors of caramel malt and mild hop flavor. Small bitterness on the finish. Balanced and tasty but nothing too special.

The aroma is pleasantly strong, but the potency doesn’t carry to the flavor. The malt is very English, but not as upfront as it should be. All-around, and average APA.

A very standard example of an APA. That is not a down grading factor in my judgement but it makes it average.

Rerate 11-6-04: I don’t know if he altered the recipe or what, but this beer is much better than I remember. More hops and more complexity make this an excellent APA. 5-10-03: Sadly, just another APA. The body is nice and the head was good. The aroma was hoppy, but something was missing. They really needed to bump up the hops or bump up the hops, possibly both. The brewery is capable of brewing something good. The Alt was evidence of that. This just isn’t exciting.
