On cask at the 1/27/07 Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting: Pours an opaque black with a frothy, well-lacing tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee beans with a touch of vanilla bourbon oak. Body starts fairly full and dark malty sweet with lots of dark chocolate and mocha flavor toward a balanced, smooth chocolatey finish. A nice brew with good balance and oak flavor.

Appearance: Pours a black body with a very, very miniscule tan head. Smell: Used espresso grinds with lesser notes of unsweetened chocolate and dark malts. Taste: Dark maltiness with a semi-sweet chocolate flavor. The coffee flavor is prounced and distinct, but kept in check, none of those pesky acrid or exceedingly burnt flavors. Medium earthy bitterness. More maltiness and coffee on the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: Not bad at all!

I tasted the cask version of this at the Atlanta Cask Ale fest. Hazy ruby black. This has a big coffee aroma, and it’s a bit ashy. This could really use a richer malt flavor to back up the coffee and provide a bit more balance.

Deep chocolate brown almost black. Overwhelming coffee on the nose. Large coffee flavor with a chocolate kicker. Medium light bitter. Medium full bodied beer with good carbonation. A very nice stout.

Cask: Pours a brown mahogany color with a brown head. Aroma is dark roast coffee, roasted malts, and some brown sugar. Flavor is malt, coffee, roasted malt, and a bitter roasty finish.

On cask at Atlanta Cask Ale. Jet black color. Overwhelming aroma of coffee that surprisingly does not follow through to the taste of the beer. That’s ok though ’cause I like some coffee. Otherwise the beer is light bodied to be aged on oak.

Cask at the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting. Pours jet black with a very short-lived bubbly tan head. The aroma is dominated by the espresso, roasted almost to the point of burnt. The underlying dark malts are there to balance things out. The taste follows the aroma with the espresso up front on top of the chocolate and dark malts. The finish is exceedingly dry and slightly burnt with the espresso lingering in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is pretty thin with little carbonation and lots of espresso bitterness. I’m a big fan of coffee stouts and I enjoyed this one though it was a bit too much of the burnt side for my liking.
