Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA May 11, 2008 Orangey-amber with slight haze. Liquorice root, pomegranate, and somewhat cherryish nose. Deep taste - almost like a dubbel with dark fruits and liquorice in a pale beer. Slightly bitter, but moderately sweet in the finish. hopdog (4654), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 1, 2004 On tap @ Coronado. Poured a medium golden color with a small head. Aroma and tastes of flowers and hops. Nice bitterness to it. I would have expected a little more of a malt presence for an IIPA. BückDich (4559), Boise, Idaho, USA Mar 23, 2006 Draft at brewery in Coronado, CA: Clear gold, nose of light dry hops and some pale malts. The flavor is a bit of a let down. Some bitterness and lots of pale malt in the body but nothing holds together. Cohesion! JorisPPattyn (4500), Antwerpen, Belgium Apr 22, 2008 Draught, two tries, both pretty different, points are an average Red amber to pale ochre with some haze under an ultra-thin head, leaving lace somehow. Banana ester, phenols, Lapsan Souchong tea and dry, ureumholding hops. First sample full of phenols, less hops, and slighlty smoked, retronasal some caramel; second sample very bitter, seriously dry and a long flowing main taste: bitter and malt cookies. Medium bodied, slightly harsh in the palate, the phenolic sample giving some caramelfeel. Strange - bit crude, and, once more, very un-Belgian. BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA May 5, 2008 Bomber bottle and served in my Duval snifter: Clean deep golden hue with a lasting frothy head and left excellent lace upon the glass. The aroma has notes of piney and herbal hops, grapefruit and banana, biscuity malt, hint of earthy Belgian yeast esters and a touch of medicinal alcohol vapours. The taste starts quite acidic and fruity before a mild dose of pale malts and caramel comes about. Yeasty and a tad wheaty before a moderately spicy and herbal finish. The mouth feel is slightly sharp and lively, chalky ashy finish did lessen the enjoyment however. This brew leans more towards the American IPA style with the Belgian characteristics more a background player. While this is still quite good, for a true Belgian IPA I would recommend Chouffe Houblon Dobbelen IPA Tripel.
