| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 9, 2009 Bottle... Clear, dark, ruby ale with a large, frothy, never-ending, off-white head. The nose suggests caramel, pine and grapefruit. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and bristly carbonation. Intensely bitter and piney with an afterthought of caramel and chocolate malts. The finish is lengthy, toasty, abrasive and just-short-of violently bitter. If I was a total hophead and liked insanely bitter beer, I would score this a 4.7; but I’m not, so I won’t. Really well-made, though. mspindler (310), Alta Loma, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 7, 2009 Bottle shared by Hophead22. Pours a hazy dark mahogany with a small tan head. Aroma is roasty and fruity with a good amount of fresh citrusy hops. Flavor is malty but not particularly sweet. Mostly caramel and roast with a nice bold hop bitterness. Lots of hop character, lots of malt character, but still manages to be perfectly balanced and very easy to drink and refreshing. Palate sits perfectly between medium and full with a nice smooth carbonation. This manages to be awesome without being over the top. Hophead22 (1090), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 5, 2009 22oz bottle. Gorgeous color, dark red/mahogany. Rich, dark fruity aroma, some muted hops. Very full flavored, rich malts, dark fruits with a real nice hop bite in the end, this is very good. Sparky27 (1596), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 3, 2009 Bomber. Pours a hazy reddish brown with a 2 finger tan head that leaves nice lacing. The nose is caramel, citrus and floral hops. The taste is tart grapefruit, sweet malt and bitter resin in the finish that sticks around. Medium semi-creamy mouthfeel. Decent stuff. Lots of hops in this one. BOLTZ7555 (1095), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 30, 2009 Dark garnet brew with lively carbonation and a pillow-top cream-colored head that left significant sticky lacing. Aroma is aggressive floral hops with notes of freshly squeezed citrus and newly chopped pine. Flavor is, without doubt, hop forward. Grapefruit, lemon zest, and Ponderosa...with subtle caramel not quite enough to balance this one. A bit syrupy but tasty. Definitely indicative of it’s West Coast roots... HopHeadinAZ (120), USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 29, 2009 Bottle: Pours a hazy ruby brown with a small tan head. The aroma is full of hops with noticeable malt notes and a hint of chocolate tones. The flavor is very hop driven with the piney hops being the most dominant. The mouth feel is medium. As a double red this beer lacks the balance I was hoping for. But this is definitely different than the original version if the alcohol listed at RateBeer is correct. Mine shows 9%.
