Corsendonk Agnus (Abbey Pale Ale)

MMMMMMMMM. Bottle. Gold pour, big frothy white head. Aroma is spicy, yeasty, fruity and just beautiful. Flavor is soft and full of yeast, spice, bread and fruity. Deliciuos!!!!!!!

Ever since my moment of heavenly bliss and inspiration a few months back with their brown ale, I have been on the lookout for the Corsendonk Abbey Pale Ale. It just had to be as good as their brown ale, and I have yet to experience a Belgian pale ale. Granted the Belgians produce some of the world’s best beers, if not all of them, but that doesn’t mean they are infallible. The pale ale is traditionally an English beer style; so much as we adopt and brew foreign beers to our own stylings.
Lips wet in anticipation, I crack into my bottle and immediately a huge head of soft white puffy foam literally overflows, trickling along the sides of her container. I wouldn’t call her a gusher, but my Corsendonk Abbey Pale Ale has definitely been waiting ever impatiently for an opportunity to escape the confines of her bottle. I quickly release her bubbly contents into my glass before more should waste away. Mournfully, I clean the spilt beer along the sides of my glass and patiently wait the multiple minutes it takes for her head to fade, tracing an intricate network of lace along the way. Her hazy haystack body reveals a nose ripe with sparkly sour yeast, lemon and citric bite, freshly ground pepper, and coriander. Unable to contain my excitement any longer, I take my first quaff and then my second. Rich, full and effervescently frothy, even more so than usual, but considering how she burst forth initially I am not surprised. The sour yeast hits right up front with spice and pepper following second. Soft notes of fresh banana soften her palate while a grassy, bitter hop reminds me that she is still a pale ale, albeit Belgian in origin. Some of the bitter grassy hops fade as my brew warms, opting to let more of the sour yeast flavors rise to the forefront as they blend perfectly with her tart citric and peppery notes. Typically there should be malts somewhere in her profile, but all of the typical pale ale malt characteristics have flown the coop in the face of this Belgian Abbey Pale Ale from Corsendonk. My glass empties all too fast and I find myself wishing I hadn’t quaffed the last bottle at the bar because I sure would enjoy another.
Initially, I was taken aback by the Corsendonk Abbey Pale Ale because she was unlike any pale ale I had ever tasted. It was a mix of Belgian sour yeast and peppery spice with grassy hoppy pale ale nips which were initially confusing to my palate. After I had a moment or two to adjust, I could then begin to pick apart and develop a growing appreciation for the beer I was savoring for the very first time. A virgin no more, my palate has taken a liking to this unique Belgian infused Abbey Pale Ale and I hope to explore more as the hands of time tick away.

Now THIS is a tripel! I’ve had this before and thought I had already rated it. Nice yeasty and spicy aroma with a hint of hops and clove. Pour was a beautiful light gold with a huge 3 finger head and tons of small rising bubbles and great sediment. Taste was delicious. Extremely dry and spicy. Pear, apple and yeast in the front with a strong bite from the carbonation and a peppery element in the cheeks. Great beer

750ml Bottle: Sweet aroma of fruit, spices, pepper, cloves, pear, light spicy hops, and yeast. Poured gold with a hint of amber in color and a large, fluffy, white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of tiny particles throughout. Small lacing. Flavor is light to medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of fruit, pear, yeast, resin, slight pepper, and pale malts. Light to medium body. Chalky texture. Sweet, fruity, resinous, dry finish.

[Bottle] Pours an almost clear gold with a large soapy off white head. Subdued malty aroma, grass, yeast. Medium mouthfeel, fig newtons, doughy yeast, raisins, and caramel.

Golden pour with a massive white head. The aroma started off with some interesting barnyard tones, later joined by some nice perfume and fruity (mostly pear) tones. The flavor was a great mix of pear, lemon, apple, and hops. Nice bubbly feel, dry finish.

This is a weel suited beer for right after a long shift at work, which is when i tried it. Certainly does pour a big head over a light yellow body. Did not get much off the nose besides some grassiness. Flavor was very floral hops with hardly any bitterness. But the high carbination that almost stings the roof of your mouth makes you forget what the flavor is. high drinkability for one with a 7.5 abv.
