Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Bottled to a trappist glass. Dark brown body with amber hints, highly frothed beige head, you can hear the carbonation like a soda. Aroma is vinous, fruity, apple, brown sugar, smokey, rye, slightly chocolate, prunes, and obviously yeast. Palate is noticeably soft and smooth. Flavor is vinous, pumpernickel bread, indeed slightly chocolate, raisins, yeast, and not very bitter. Nothing it overwhelming, its balanced, and its very smooth.

My first Belgian brown. Quite tasty. Big big head lots of retention. Nose of Cinnamon and spice. Flavors of dark roast compliment a medium palate. Finish of warm alcohol and lingering cookie. Great!

It poured dark brown with ruby highlights and tan fluffy head, settling quickly. Sort of a winey aroma with some burnt sugars and cherries. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty with a hint of roasted bitterness and the nice bready mouthfeel. I think it’s delicious and well balanced with subdued complexity. VERY drinkable. Cheers!

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 20 Sep 2008) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with dried fruit, raisins, prunes, dark bread and brown sugar. Malty taste with notes of dark fruit, dark rye bread, raisins and a fairly dry, grainy finish. Not very bitter. Nice and well balanced dubbel.

A typical Belgian beer, good taste and aroma, but nothing special that makes you remember it.

Dark brown pour, large fluff of a white head. Some malt and sweet aromas, brown sugar. Taste doesn’t waver too far from the aromas. Sweet malt, brown sugar, raisin. A similar spiciness with a pumpkin ale. A little sticky and clean finishing. Not a fan of Abbey ales at all, but this one I don’t mind. Is not overloaded with fruit and carbonation.
