Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

Bottle. Poured a clear cooper amber with a thick off-white head. Aroma was full of yeast and light fruit notes, particularly apples. Flavor has bit of smokiness as well as some light fruit again and yeast notes.

pours out clear burnt brown with a tall fizzy lumpy beige head. the body is a deep dark amber in the light bit it is mainly a light brown all around. the aromas are sweet and pleseant. i can sense dull licorise, fennel, chives, some alcohol, apples, and raisins. it is medium to almost full body with a substantial amount of carbonation and a grainy bubbly mouthfeel. it is a sour bitter at first then it opens up to smokey wood, onion, bitter fruit, some yeast, pale roasted malts, and apricot. it finishes very dry, and aftertaste is pretty mellow but lingers on for a little while. not bad for a dubbel but definatley not my favorite.

Pours a rich purple with a medium-sized cream-coloured head. It has a fruity aroma of hops and berries. It tastes of burnt malt, hops and fresh berries. It has a slightly thin mouthfeel, although not extremely thin. Overall, a pretty good beer, although the aroma and appearance are a notch above the taste of the beer itself.

Bottle at Union Jack’s poured into a Corsendonk Trappist glass (which I bought for $3.00) produced a dark brown body and medium light brown head that was creamy and long lasting. Taste was dominated with spices and dark fruits. The complexity of flavors and aroma increased as the ale warmed. Another very enjoyable Belgium ale.

On tap at "Le Belge" in Offenbach, from a Corsendonk chalice. It’s actually "Paternoster", you know. ;=) Reddish dark brown colour; medium, creamy beige head with some lacing. Intense aroma of licorice and orange peel. Medium to low carbonation, medium body, slightly grainy mouthfeel despite the alcohol. Taste is not too sweet, fortunately (something I detest in some Belgian ales), herbal spices and aniseed dominate. Rather bitter at first, then getting slightly sweeter towards the finish, but then dry again. Interesting! Mildly alcoholic after taste - otherwise, the alc seems well integrated, the beer on the whole well-balanced and compelling, if not terribly complex. Very good, highly sessionable(!) Belgian dubbel.

750mL Bottle -- At first I was unimpressed with this brew, but as time went on and the temperature in my glass rose so did my satisfaction. I still think it is a little thin on the palate but the flavors and complexity are there.

Very dark brown color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of malt, some fruit, and coffee overtones; Flavor mainly of roasted malt, caramel, and even chocolate; Balanced with a nice finish; For me, one of the better Belgium brews - really good.
