Commercial Description:
Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Editor's note: Apparently production has moved from Van Steenberge to du Bocq as of Sept 2007.

12 oz. bottle. Dark ruby brown pour producing a very durable large light brown head and excellent lace. Roasted character to the aroma is supplemented by some yeasty and earthy notes as well as some faint dark fruit. Palate is mildly astringent and dry with a medium body and carbonation. Sweet, burnt caramel flavor is held nicely in check by a spicy bitterness. This is not as fruity as some of the dubbles that I’ve had. It leans toward a drier, more bitter finish, which isn’t all bad as far as I’m concerned.

Sampled at a blind abbey dubbel tasting hosted by tennisjoel on 4-14-07, along with eight other beers. This was the fourth beer that we tasted. It finished in second place in my rankings, and it was second place in the group rankings. Originally poured from a 750 mL bottle. The overwhelming winner of the night was ’t Smisje Dubbel, with Corsendonk Pater finishing a strong if distant second. <P>Wheat-like, smoky aroma featuring sweet tobacco and fresh lemon juice scents. Almost reminiscent of a rauch-weizen, although the smoke smell is much weaker here than in an actual rauchbier. Very strong, very good aroma. Pours a remarkably dark amber with a red hue and a very small amount of beige head. Sharp wheat and smoke-like tastes. Tastes like it smells, but I think those elements work better in the aroma than in the flavor. Dry finish. Sour and bitter aftertaste. Medium body. Very lively on the tongue. High in carbonation. When I tried this beer, I figured that it would win the tasting handily. Little did I suspect the awesomeness that is ’t Smisje Dubbel remained on the horizon...

750ml, very nice presentation with cork. Beautiful looking with a nice nutty smell. However, a little dry and bitter. Not very tasty, but a mildly enjoyable brew nonetheless.

Somewhat weak in flavor. Tastes of apples almost to the point of being apple juice like. Low alcohol mouthfeel with a lasting warming finish. Pretty good but I expect more from a trappist beer.

Draft pours dark brown amber with nice amount of head. Head stays until the end. Nice smooth flavor, with a very pleasant finish.

Super-dark, almost opaque amber color, with small, lasting head. Flavor is a little on the thin side; something like a black lager with Belgian yeast flavors. Much lighter body than I expected.
