(Cask, Market Porter, London, 22 July) Colour is dark amber, with little head. Nose is malty, a bit fruity with dried fruit, caramel and a nutty hint. Taste starts malty and nutty then turns fruity with hints of dark cherry and a balanced dusty hoppiness in the finish. Balanced but a bit understated. Nice though.

Cask (gravity dispense), Battersea Beer Festival. Not much to say about this one really. Mid copper colour. Whilst the name might suggest something rather aromatic, this is a fairly dry, earthy bitter with the emphasis on malt. Hoppy bitterness comes through late. Surprised I’d never rated it before. Perfectly proficient, but unspectacular.

Cask@Battersea Beer Festival. Caramel and butterscotch flavours, with a creamy mouthfeel. Sweetish and malty. A bit boring. Thin mouthfeel.

Cask gravity at Battersea Beer Festival 2006. Deep chestnut with disappearing white head. Slightly meaty aroma. Good agressive hops in mouth and drying hop finish. Quite nice. As you would expect from Cottage, rich flavours. But this is better than the average bitter.

Cask at the Swan in the Rushes, Loughborough. Dark brown colour with thin head and some light lacing. Struggled to detect much aroma, quite bland tasting but with malts in there somewhere. Watery mouthfeel.

Deep red/brown with a beige head. Aromas are mild fruit, mainly berries with light spice and a touch of soda water. Flavours are again mild fruit with some earthiness and a dry finish. A bit dull.

Plain darkish beer with a watery and lightly hopped aroma with a very light flavour. Overall a weak beer.
