| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | May 5, 2005 Red-brown hue with a tan, frothy, average sized head. PINE! Grapefruit and caramel lag behind. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter flavor becomes a moderately acidic, moderately bitter finish. Medium-light body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. The bottom line is: the bottom really drops out on this one...the aroma got my hopes up too high. skaughty (621), Marietta, Georgia, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 29, 2005 Off to a roaring start with the warm, but hop laced aroma. The appearance is dazzling (for a brown ale), with a nice froth, and some more sizzle upon agitation. The first sip = dry, The second sip = burnt. The third sip= paper bag. Put it together, you get a dry burnt paper bag. Sorely lacking any sweetness to offset. The finish is bold in its bitterness, but still not strong enough to clear the paper out of my mouth. Really, this isn’t that bad - just disappointing after a great start! (can’t complain when it was a freebie - thanks aracauna) aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 18, 2005 This is not an IPA and I don’t think the brewery considers it an IPA, but it is a very hoppy brown ale. The hops dominate the aroma with the aroma doing more of hinting at the bitterness in the flavor that showing the aroma of the actual hop. Very little of the citrus or pine character left. The flavor showcases the sweet, nuts and cocoa of the malt with the hops playing the supporting role of balancing the malt with a firm bitterness. Not bad at all. The dark brow body is topped by a pale khaki head that is sizeable and adds to the creaminess of the body. tomhenderson (128), Carolinas area, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 16, 2005 12 oz bottle, Dec. 2003 version. Pours a somewhat cloudy brown with a thick head that dissapates eventually to a lacy ring along the glass. I’m surprised this is called an IPA with the balance leaning toward maltiness. Much more malt than hops in flavor, although there’s plenty of bitterness so I know they’re in there early in the boil. Overall, a very drinkable beer, but far from being a top shelf IPA. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 8, 2005 This is the darkest IPA I’ve ever had. Almost black. Salty, hoppy, overall solid beer. Not the best IPA I’ve ever had but I could get used to sampling this offering. Thanks go to Ross for sending me this beer. argo0 (6978), Washington DC, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 11, 2004 Large tan head atop a clear dark copper body. Aroma is strong caramel/toffee, chocolate, prune, some grapefruit. Taste is minimally sweet, caramel, chocolate, grapefruit, some wood. Medium body. Not enough sweetness for the strong malty flavors. jasonp (1513), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 6, 2004 Cloudy brown ruby with an off white head. Aroma of hops and some caramel. Taste has notes of some wood and caramel - medium dosage of hops. Could use more more malty body and sweetness. Medium mouthfeel. Ok but disappointing considering their Endo India Pale Ale is very solid.
