PhillyBeer2112 (1842), Orange Park, Florida, USA Dec 29, 2000 Ahh, a true taste of English real ale
in a bottle. One of the best beers I’ve
ever had, and def one of the best bitters
I’ve had. Its rare to find that great
English ESB flavor in a bottle. This
bottle-conditioned ESB is top notch. Great
malt flavors, firm bitter backbone, English
hop flavors just detectable. A near perfect
brew. noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA Jun 1, 2005 Wrote a good long review but a %^#$@! database error wiped it. Poured chestnut. No head. Smoky, peaty hoppy nose, dark fruit and clove secondary. Real bitter and smoke flavors with dark fruit and spice. Bitter hop finish. Thin when cold, better when warmer. Never had a "hand pumped pub pour" bitter so can’t say if it’s authentic but it’s good when compared to other bottle conditioned strong bitters. Worth at least a try. DocLock (4102), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 29, 2006 I enjoyed this one a great deal. The pour was a stunning hazy ruby with 2-finger khaki head. Great aroma of caramel malt, brown sugar, toffee, some vinous cabernet notes. The palate is dense, complex, smooth, and well balanced, providing flavors of a pronounced vinous note, on the tart side, cabernet, caramel malt, dark fruit, cherry, hops, and a slight rauchy hint. Perhaps the best British beer I have yet encountered. LordNeuf (125), Acton, Massachusetts, USA Jan 29, 2004 A very nice scotish ale. Very malty, like bread grains flavor. Good mouthfeel and good flavor. Reminesent of SkullSplitter dizziius (9), San Diego, California, USA does not count Dec 20, 2002 There seems to be quite a wide range of opinions on this brew. I wonder if this ale is affected by the cross-atlantic trip or improper storage more than other beers. The pint I had was one of the most intense ales I’ve ever had -- felt almost like a strong Belgian ale -- which does not coincide with other folks’ comments on the lack of hops, etc.
