Commercial Description:
California Black Beer is a well-balanced American dark lager that emphasizes its grain. It has a slightly roasted character with a slight sweetness and a hint of chocolate malt. Like the bear, it is called black. But if you look close, it's really brown.

Pours medium brown with tan head. Nose is somewhat faint, but has noticeable brown sugar and roasty components. Rather thin bodied on the palate (almost watery) with some light toasted grain flavors, brown sugar, and a light & sweet finish. Easy drinking, but only because it is so watery.

22. Thanks, RiversideAK! Pours clear light brown with a thin white head. Aroma of white vinegar, caramel. Tastes pretty much the same. Que sera, sera.

Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a large-bubbled ring of light tan head. Aroma of toasty grains and a touch of dark caramel and a hint of light fruits. Starts effervescent with some biting carbonation and lightly sweet with a touch of tartness perhaps coming from the roasted malt. Finishes dry, toasty and grainy with moderate bitterness. An ok dark lager, but could be a little smoother and more balanced.

Pour was dark black, schwarzbier-looking, decent choco-colored head too. The aroma was chocolatey munich malts, dry grains. The flavor followed the aroma, sweet thick malt chocolate with some cocoa elements, biscuits, faint roast, finishing with some floral hops (odd?) too. The dryness of the finish I like in my dunkels or schwarz (this seemed to be more of the latter), was overwhelmed by the malty thickness, over-sweetness. Mouthfeel was a bit thick to finish clean with a lager-like element. A decent brew, though.

22 oz bottle, via BA Floydster. Pours a clear dark brown body, completely clear, with a small off-white head that faded quickly. The nose is fairly grainy with some light Nutella, light-roast coffee, hazelnut, and light roast. The flavor is a bit off though, there’s a weird, thin, almost lightly plastic like note that pervades from start to finish. Slightly husky and toasted grains, some nutty flavors, very light bitterness. Tastes thin overall. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation, the finish lingers longer than expected for a supposedly clean Lager. Overall, this was not a favorite by any stretch of the imagination. Probably better than the 22nd percentile, but not one I’d try again.

Woody maroon color with decent but with a phleghm-like viscosity. Roasted malt and intriguing Kalamata olive aromatic components. Weird. Rubbery roast flavors. Drinkable, perhaps a a fitting complement to olive loaf and hummus. A strange brew for sure.

22. Thanks, Riverside! Pours crystal clear rubied blackish amber. Thin gray film. Big sour kalamata olive nose. Fizzy watery body, sour mid-palate (tangy vinegar). Mild finish. Something went bad wrong here.

Bottle. Poured a dark reddish brown with an off white head. Aroma was of toasted to burnt bread, with notes of earth and nuts. Flavor was a bit better than the aroma, which I was not a big fan of. A bit watery, but it seemd to work pretty well. Not a whole lot going on, but it was present. Roasted malt, cocoa and light caramel notes. Some light chalkiness in the finish. Ok.
