Very full flavor. Maple syrup, alcohol spiciness, and brown sugar. Finish is hoppy bitterness w/ alcohol bite. This is everything i want in a BW. Saarlander (1579), Rancho Cucamonga, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 12, 2006 Harsh alcohol bite on the first taste, thought it would calm down abit, but it stays harsh, although the alc is harsh, everything else I liked about this beer, dark fruit, Resin, hops, nice brew, could actually use abit less alcohol, never thought I’d say that! Thanks to Duane for the bottle! patrick767 (2051), fort wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 8, 2006 bottle - Pours dark reddish brown with about a finger’s width head that lasted for a few minutes and left some lacing. The aroma is a pleasant mix of malt, dark fruit, and alcohol and it has a flavor to match. However, the reason I wasn’t quite as impressed with this brew as most reviewers is the harsh alcohol presence. While the warming effect is nice, it’s too harsh on the palate. Pretty good, but maybe it needs to age. Dough77 (777), Aurora, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 31, 2006 First off, wax tops do it for me. Dont know why, but they add probably a couple percentage points to my score. Pour is murky brown with aroma full of malt, caramel, nice amount of alcohol, raisin and fig. Flavor is all the same but more potent, and it lingers for awhile. Great beer, need more. beeryum (652), Norcross, Georgia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 27, 2006 Bottle, poured (decanted) fairly clear and dark bronze. Huge caramel malty aroma, slightly toasty, and a bit roasty. Very nice. Sweet caramel malt flavors, some hops, but the beer showcases the malts. Beer was still a bit hot, and should age very well. Well done - very good barleywine. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 26, 2006 Pours a murky bronze/amber color, small off white head. Aroma is English, caramel, and slight roasted notes. Kind of “muddy” overall. Not a huge fan. Flavor is sweet, grassy hops and caramel mix together well. Flavor was surprisingly rich and balanced, the aroma had me thinking otherwise. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 20, 2006 Dark Horse has impressed me. Here is a top-notch barley wine. Out pours a thick brown potion topped by a small beige head that makes a quick exit. The aroma is complex, holding notes of caramel, citrus, cream, dried fruit, honey, chocolate syrup, raspberry jam, and bourbon. Full bodied, syrupy in the mouth. The aromas are echoed in the flavor which is rich, robust, and gives a nice warm feeling as it cascades down the esophagus. GET ME MORE OF THIS!!! blankboy (3225), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 17, 2006 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry courtesy of Silphium. Fourth beer of our Dark Horse Brewing tasting. This bottle was a bitch to open! Pours a slightly hazy ruby-brown with a spare diminishing foamy off-white head. Aroma starts pretty mild but slowly comes out more and more. There’s some sweet caramel malt, dark fruit, oak, hops and alcohol. Flavour follows the aroma and has a big, slightly harsh, bitter and boozy finish. Medium bodied. Pretty good and four for four for Dark Horse so far at this tasting.
