Initial smell is fantastic, loads of rich molasses and raisin with a good bit of rum soaked fruit and some vanilla notes. A bit of subdued grapefruit as well. Flavor matched, although not quite as rich as the nose. As it warmed, the alcohol unfortunately came up to the front a bit more, thinning out the flavor considerably and also detracting a bit from the nose. One of the few beers of this nature I can recall that was better cool than after it had some time to breathe and warm up. So the initial enthusiasm is a bit scaled down, but another impressive beer from Dark Horse.

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 13, 2009 Huge aroma of brown sugar, nuts, cherries, burnt candy, leather and alcohol. Also some yeast esters that remind me of a hint of bubblegum. Very aromatic.
Sparkling amber in color with a thin head that fades.
Sweet and rough are two adjectives I think of to describe the taste. Lots of caramel malt and lots of alcohol, but it is pleasant. There is a bit of distracting papery, leathery oxidation... but this is a pretty old bottle. It was given to me by someone from Michigan at the first Milwaukee YeHaw! gathering at MrFacto’s place (2005?). Good times.
Body is full, finish is sweet and warming.

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Oct 7, 2009 bottle. my bottle has "barley wine" instead of old ale on the label, but i’m assuming it’s the same beer from looking at the brewers website and searching here. a true and honest bastard to open. almost threw the sumbitch against the wall. but once i was into fort knox i could smell the sweet fruit and raisin before i poured this. christ this is smelling hot, and there is more than a little chocolate tthere too. well, the phillies just scored. damnit. sticky sweet at first. takes a few sips to get past that. sure is an ugly looking one, murky dark tea and slurry i like it. . caramel notes are strong, sweet boozey fruit flavors and just a bit of the chocolate in the finish. jesus, jimenez, throw a fucking strike, you don’t need another in the fucking dirt.. fuck me running, another run. strawberry poptart flavor(with frosting) is getting more dominant as this warms. had to be a fielding error, single with error advancing runner to 2nd should be how they score that. but the run should count against the pitcher. kind of a minty hop note working the roof of my mouth. a bit of orange marmalade going on this too. wonder how old this is.? love a good run down on the basepaths. hot and sweet from beginning to end.
