Commercial Description:
Have you read the description for the regular Crooked Tree yet? Well this beer is almost the same just double. We actually took the Crooked Tree recipe and doubled all of the ingredients except the water, just the way a DOUBLE should be made. Big hops balanced with tons of malt give this beer a huge body. Although this beer is as cool as "the Fonz" when first purchased, it gets really mellow and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark place you'll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to sneak past the hops, they’re just not fast enough. This beer is hugely delicious so it will need your undivided attention (the chores can wait....trust us). 98 IBU's

bottle by way of jw77 aka jw347 aka johnathan... beautiful hazy rich copper color with a permanent light tan head and lots of lace. super sweet aroma packed with caramel, light pine, mild citrus pith, alcohol and hop spice. the flavor is similar... actually, exactly the same. sweet, but only moderately considering how much sugar it takes to cover up 14% abv... why put in all those hops if yer just going to cover them up??? it leans on full bodied with a thick mouth feel. it leaves a sugary film in my mouth and throat. just like the previous posters have mentioned... not a bad hoppy BW, though.

Bottle courtesy of BOLTZ7555. Pours a hazy amber with a 2 finger beige head and great lacing. Nose is floral hops, pine and malt. Palate is caramel malts and citrus with a mild resin finish. Medium mouth feel. I was surprised to see the ABV on this one – it hides it nicely which is scary. Decent DIPA - not what I picture a DIPA to be, but good in its own right. Thanks Jason!

Bottle, courtesy Guerde. A 12 oz double IPA with a waxed cap. Rock n roll. Pours a dark ruby brown, and fairly clear. Milky white head, and enough lacing to feed a village. Big, juicy floral piney hops in the nose. Rich molasses. Heavy cream. Cinnamon buns. Nice touch of alcohol in there. Drinking it, was surprised to find the hops somewhat subdued overall. Mostly rich malts. Brown sugar, molasses, vanilla. Hops come through in the bitter finish. Very soft, palatable body. Alcohol is well-hidden. Very complex, and as it sits and warms up, it gains characteristics of a nice barley wine. Enjoyable.

Bottle: Courtesy of nefarious, thanks Chaz. Pours a murky bronze color with a small white head. Caramel malts, grapefruit, orange rind and some spiced notes present in the aroma. I am a bit curious as to the age on this due to the lack of that big hop kick...caramel tones, some piney and citrus hops present. I will say this...as this warmed it became much more tasty and seemed to balance itself out. Rerate: Draft @ the brewpub...color was identical, nose was massive in the citrus, peach and pineapple dept. Just enough of a caramel malt background to give it a bit of balance. Big, sticky sweet body...flavor is a bit hot, notes of citrus, tropical fruits and caramel malt noted. Much better, rating reflects rerate.

Sampled at OSLO’s and Guerde’s tasting courtesy of badgerben

This was a brew I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on for a long time. Briefly made an appearance in the twin cities, and before I knew it, it was gone. Now supposedly Dark Horse is pulling out of the state. This saddens me. Well, finally I got to taste this wonderful elixir. Dark red pour. Piney hops abound, but do not overpower this beer as I thought they might. More of a balanced IIPA, almost wanders into the American Strong Ale category. A bit boozy, but that doesn’t detract from this as it’s not over the top. This is another beer that I think could actually benefit from some aging. Still very solid.

Small sample at OSLO and Guerde’s tasting on Friday, 5-23-08. Lovely, buttery, hoppy, dry aroma features a pine scent. Pours a clear copper. Very good taste features lemon, pine, and cake frosting flavors. Medium body. A little undercarbonated.

Thick murky brown in color with a thin watery ivory cream head. Smell is malty and toffee. Flavor is quite earthy and wine like. Alcohol and heavy burnt malt are present here. Mouthfeel is quite undercarbonated and thick. Big alcohol finish. Overall, very Barley wine like (smell, taste and palate).

12 oz. bottle - thanks to drewbeerme for the trade; kind wish i read the ABV before popping as i didn’t realize it was one of "those" kinds of DIPA’s (haha) and it could have used a little aging for my palate; pours dark amber and mostly clear; flat and almost no head; aromas of sugar, malts and alcohol; very syrupy in both aromas and texture; slightly hot and strength is obvious; lots of bitter mixed with sugar; thin texture, but lots of punch to the syrupy, thin body; interesting, just a little much for me
