| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 18, 2008 VERY piney nose.....high hop aroma.Very herbal and fresh...I could smell this all day. Flavor falls a bit short of the aroma.....more of a general bitterness with only subtle hop flavors. Sweet malt finish. Malt and hops not in balance....would have liked more hop flavor, and less malt presence. hapjydeuce (771), Del Mar, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 17, 2008 Bottle shared at Sean and Ryans tasting with many others from the North County area. Dark gold color with medium head. Very floral aroma of hops and pine wood with grapefruit citrus. This beer has a huge malt foundation that helps prolong the flavor. Tons of orange citrus and a bit of apricot. Pretty thick mouth-feel with a big warming alcohol finish that seems over the top. Not bad. Taverner (850), San Ramon, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 15, 2008 Updated: May 16, 2008This has to have been aged somewhat. I picked this up at DLD and got around to drinking it. About the smoothest IPA I’ve ever had. There is no alcohol flavor, but your throat does not lie. Pours a ruddy brown with white head. I’m still not sure what to make of this. On one hand, it does not match my expectations of an IPA. Very smooth, goes down like honey.Very caramel flavors going on here. Strong MW IPA flavor to this one - full of malt and grassy flavors. Not floral, not dank - barely bitter. But on the other hand it has a nectar-like quality that happens rarely in beer. And yet this is 13.6%!?!?!?!? I give it high marks, even though it thoroughly confused me. JJClark (545), Roscoe, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber color with a large off white head. Aroma of citrus, hops, roasted mallt and yeast. Taste is well ballanced between the malt and hops. Probably the best DIPA’s I have had so far. The alcohol is well hidden. It has a moderately bitter, semi dry crisp finish. A great beer overall! ChainGangGuy (2568), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 13, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clear, amber body with a tiny, off-white head.
Smell: Cinnamon spiced caramel, unripened plums, booze, and a leafy, grapefruit scent.
Taste: Sweet, spicy caramel with an almost candyish quality to it. Pinch of fresh chopped herbs. Slight plum fruitiness. Citrusy flavors of grapefruit rinds and orange peels. Medium-high bitterness, but the malt backbone does a solid job of balancing it. A bit of heat on the bittersweet finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Smooth texture.
Drinkability: A very enjoyable, considerably very drinkable Double IPA from Dark Horse. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 13, 2008 Bottles courtesy of SPLITGRIN and knight84. Pours really dark for a double IPA and chocolately dark amber with a short lived offwhite head. Smell is rich, dark fruity, hint chocolatey and mild hops with some light earthy bark like hops. More barley wine like in the nose.
Taste is like warm, soft and thin caramel with a good bit of alcohol coming through. Really not very hoppy flavorwise or bitter and not really viscuous like I’d expect of such a high alcohol beer. Actually, slightly thin and watery in the flavor, but still pleasant. Somewhat easy to drink despite the high ABV, and light alcohol flavor. BOLTZ7555 (1096), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 12, 2008 Aroma was incredible...beautiful combination of tart & sweet. Appearance, however, had a bit to be desired. Minimal ring of a head and a body that lacked adequate carbonation. Dark blood orange color. That 13.6% definitely showed itself here...the first couple of sips were enjoyable but the alcohol was overpowering. Toffee, caramel, and brown sugar almost played a bigger role than the hops...somewhat barleywine-like. nefarious (203), Clarkston, Michigan, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 10, 2008 heavy carmel and citrus aroma. pours a beautiful reddish copper. Heavy carmel and alcohol. But the alcohol is not over powering! Wonderful beer. Nice thick mouthfeel as well. Not as sweet or syrup-y as some of the other higher ABV IIPA’s. I’m gonna store a couple of others for awhile.
