Commercial Description:
Have you read the description for the regular Crooked Tree yet? Well this beer is almost the same just double. We actually took the Crooked Tree recipe and doubled all of the ingredients except the water, just the way a DOUBLE should be made. Big hops balanced with tons of malt give this beer a huge body. Although this beer is as cool as "the Fonz" when first purchased, it gets really mellow and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark place you'll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to sneak past the hops, they’re just not fast enough. This beer is hugely delicious so it will need your undivided attention (the chores can wait....trust us). 98 IBU's

VERY piney nose.....high hop aroma.Very herbal and fresh...I could smell this all day. Flavor falls a bit short of the aroma.....more of a general bitterness with only subtle hop flavors. Sweet malt finish. Malt and hops not in balance....would have liked more hop flavor, and less malt presence.

12 oz bottle. Darker color. Little head tells of booze to come, but 13%? That is hidden in the flavor, but not the effect. Share this with someone or sleep on the couch tonight.

Picked up a four-pack (with green waxed tops) from Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a hazy amber brew with a thick and lumpy off-white head that has some good retention and sticky lacing. Aroma of grapefruit jest, some slight pine, a touch of herb spice and caramel malt. Taste is medium to full bodied, light carbonation with flavors of bitter grapefruit, caramel malt a touch of black pepper with some sweet tangerine. Finish is semi-sweet bitter with a lingering grapefruit aftertaste.

Smooth hop smell and a orange amber color. Very thick looking, but not thick in the mouth. Balance towards bitterness. Good malt backbone with a solid hop flavor very well balanced. Nice.

Bottle: I first though that the wax over the bottle cap was cool. However, after almost stabbing myself trying to remove it, my opinion changed. Nevertheless, good double IPA. Hides the alcohol very well. Not very thick for a DIPA. Good.

Solid copper in color with a moderate head of small bubbles. Aromas were of sweet citric hops, rich caramel and soft spice overtones. In the mouth this is full-bodied and concentrated with plenty of malt to balance the hops. The rich midpalate fades to a slightly sour finish. Amazingly this does not come off as hot given the high alcohol level.

Dark Horse is a force to be reckoned with. Pours a deep, murky amber with a foamy off-white head. Potent aroma of pine and citrus hops, fresh hay, and cracked black pepper, with caramel peeking through. Full-bodied. The hops clearly overshadow the caramel sweetness but don’t obliterate it. Nor does the high ABV present itself in the taste, though it does have its effect. This is a keeper to be stored to see what could happen.

a heavily carbonated dark beer with faint off white rocky head. Sweet bitter hop aroma with faint malts. Bitter grapefruit hop body with a caramel malt undertone. I loved the sweet he bitter finish. Amazing.
