Commercial Description:
Have you read the description for the regular Crooked Tree yet? Well this beer is almost the same just double. We actually took the Crooked Tree recipe and doubled all of the ingredients except the water, just the way a DOUBLE should be made. Big hops balanced with tons of malt give this beer a huge body. Although this beer is as cool as "the Fonz" when first purchased, it gets really mellow and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark place you'll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to sneak past the hops, they’re just not fast enough. This beer is hugely delicious so it will need your undivided attention (the chores can wait....trust us). 98 IBU's

Dark Horse is a force to be reckoned with. Pours a deep, murky amber with a foamy off-white head. Potent aroma of pine and citrus hops, fresh hay, and cracked black pepper, with caramel peeking through. Full-bodied. The hops clearly overshadow the caramel sweetness but don’t obliterate it. Nor does the high ABV present itself in the taste, though it does have its effect. This is a keeper to be stored to see what could happen.

a heavily carbonated dark beer with faint off white rocky head. Sweet bitter hop aroma with faint malts. Bitter grapefruit hop body with a caramel malt undertone. I loved the sweet he bitter finish. Amazing.

Thanks to tytoanderso for trading me this one. No idea on the date or year of this, green wax. Dark amber with a thin white head. Huge pineapple and citrus grapefruit aroma and flavor. Some resiny and flower hops as well. Great malty backbone to this one. Very well balanced and just delicious. Finished with not one hint of the ABV. Very very good.

[Bottle, thanks a lot Tytoanderso!] Pours deep red with a nearly nonexistent head. Aroma is big on pineapple and grapefruit when first poured, but as it warms it the malt starts to really show through more with some alcohol also present. Taste is very malty and then the hops and alcohol kick in. Fairly thick mouthfeel with a decent bitter-citrus finish. A very solid beer.

(bottle, thanks Tytoanderso!) Pours really dark red with an off-white head. Aroma is pretty good with an initially strong scent of pineapple. The aroma changes quite a bit, with other smells of grapefruit peel and a candy-like smell. The smell becomes more alcoholic and malty as the beer warms up. The taste is pretty malty sweet up-front, with some good hops on the finish along with some graham cracker. Minutes after drinking this I can still taste some grapefruit peel when I exhale. The mouthfeel is full and chewy. This is a quality beer.

bottle. Aroma has notes of alcohol, plum, pear, grape, caramel, and some roasted malt. Dark red amber hue with a small off-white head that almost fully diminished and left no lace. Flavor is sweet and sticky with a bitter finish. More like an old ale or barley wine than a DIPA but I’m not complaining. Sweet caramel, pear, plum, roasted malt, alcohol, and herbs. Palate is full bodied and oily flat. A really delicious brew but not really what one would expect from a DIPA but rather a barley wine or old ale. I really like this style of thick, sweet, intense brew and I can’t wait till this one gets a few years on it.

Better than expected. Too dark in my book, but whatever. Some volatile alcohol in the nose, but over all, very smooth hoppy attack with a big background. the 13.6% doesn’t really show in the taste, but definitely in the nose. Nice beer.

pours a nice caramel/red color with one finger of tan head, nice sticky lacing. nose is resinous with slight citrus and definite alcohol notes, some of the malty sweetness making it’s way through the thick of it as well. Flavor is surprisingly smooth, not nearly as bitter as I expected it to be. Very malty onset moving towards more of the resinous notes detected in the nose toward the finish. Good piney finish. Body is smooth and somewhat light in my opinion, carbonation is also very faint. This is good, but not all that I had hoped for.
