| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 16, 2007 Reddish orange body with yeast floaties, lots of them. Also a bubbly off white head. Tons of hops in the aroma, mostly floral and some citrus rinds. Also some subtle caramel malt notes. A buttload of bitter hops, grapefruit rinds, some floral with a finish of more bitter hops. Sticks in the mouth, but very full. Nice and tasty. jarspag (600), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 14, 2007 12 oz pour courtesy of my buddy Matt! Thanks! Pours a murky orange. Aroma picks up orange, citrus, a touch of spice and pine. Flavor is decent - dominated mostly by zesty citrus and orange. Bittering lingers quite prominently. Overall, not a huge fan - I can’t recall ever having a big bold IIPA over 11% that was enjoyable for me. Very reminiscent of 120 minute. Too much of an orange juice thing going on. But the alcohol is masterfully hidden. eaglefan538 (2403), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 8, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Robert at SL. Pour was orangey amber with a nice initial head, solid retention, good lacing, on par for the style. The aroma was tea bags (but in a good way), oranges, other citrus notes. The flavor was much the same, some additional piney-ness, peaches, alcohol rather smooth for the abv (13%!!!????), quite drinkable. Full bodied mouthfeel with ample but not overdone carbonation. Thanks, Robert! miketd (685), Cleveland, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 4, 2007 Bottle thanks to sprinkle. Pour is deep orange with a big, rocky, white head. Good lacing. Big nose of grapefruit, pine and sweet fruit. Flavor is of citrusy and pine hops and balanced by a good amount of malt. Alcohol is present, but not unwelcome. Good, big, and creamy body. Smooth. Finishes with a bit of alcohol burn. Very nice! iowaherkeye (1877), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 13, 2007 12oz waxed bottle, no date, thanks to Duane for giving me this for no other reason than for him giving me room and board. I also apologize to anyone that was hoping to sample this at a tasting--I’m selfish and my gf wanted to try it as well. I remember this was phenomenal at GTMD ’07 (notes to follow).
Hazy copper red with a few bubbles and a ring of beige for a head--a few floaties noted. Aroma is quite hoppy--citrus fruits, raspberries, and blueberries follow. There is also some pineapple amongst the strong caramel malt backbone. At room temperature (go figure), the alcohol is indicative of the strength, but I still wouldn’t put this at 13.6%. Lots of caramel in the flavor with the hops not being the highlight. Flavor still has the berries, added pine, and pineapple, but aren’t in your face. Lightly earthy with a bit of husky grain. Bitterness peaks at a 3-4, and as I said before, the alcohol is masked well. I’d think this was more like an 8% brew. Also, at this point I’d say it’s more like a somewhat balanced American barleywine, and man is it good. Full syrupy body with low low carbonation. If I remember correctly, at the Great Taste ’07 this was hoppy as all hell and I (still) loved it. Ungstrup (15420), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 11, 2007 Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of hops and caramel as well as light notes of alcohol. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel, hops, and peaches as well as a light dusty note from the hops. The body is like thick hop juice and the alcohol burns slihghtly in the throat. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 8, 2007 Big on hops, sure, but one of the most mellow, well balanced IIPAs I’ve tried. Pours a dark amber, lots of sediment, and a quickly fading off white/light tan head. Nose is hops and citrus, at first - very nice - and becomes more noticeably sweet, with notes of caramel, and malty as it warms (and, in truth, as I, too, am warmed by it). Flavor is long lasting, with alcohol and hops dominating the front, along with noticeable sweet and creamy notes, and a long, creamy hop finish. While I can probably, to some extent, be described as a "hop head," I’m rarely a big fan of beers that are hoppy, simply for the sake of hoppiness, with little else of any worth. This beer is not one of those. Well rounded, delicious, and full. A great brew!
