Thick copper with a thin tan head that’s gone much too quickly. Aroma is a bit like a hoppy barley wine – alcohol, crystal malt, brown sugar, pineapple and a ton of aromatic citrus and pine hops. The mouth feel is thick and the alcohol grabs hold of me right away finishing up bitter followed by a chaser of alcohol warming. It’s hoppy, but not over the top hoppy like hopslam. Grapefruit and citrusy hops, mixed fruits, caramel malt, brown sugar and alcohol dominate the flavors. It’s almost cloyingly sweet and doesn’t come across as bitter as you’d expect from the IBUs. porterhouse (1156), Alna, Maine, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Jun 12, 2009 (Bottle via trade with WeeHeavySD, thanks Jon!) Pours lightly reddish amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit and lots of candy-malt. Mouthfeel smooth, medium-full, slightly loose. A bit sticky/syrupy on the back end. Lots of fine, weepy, broken light lacing. Flavor is big candy-malt overlain by piney and grapefruity hops. Very barleywine-like. More malt profile than in most big IPAs. Finishes with a bitter bite. Very nice and smooth. ABV well-hidden. Alldaydrinker (558), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 1, 2009 Pours a clear amber color with a small offwhite head with lots of spot lacing and good head retention. Nose is fruity, sweet, caramel, alcohol, citrus and grapefruit. Initial taste is resiny grapefruit hop with lot of caramel sweetness. touch of citrus. Mid palate gets warmer with alcohol becoming more noticeable but still well balanced for over 13%. Finishing dry, spicy, sweet and good hop character. Above average palate duration. Light body. Definitely barleywine like qualities in this one. Extremely drinkable especially for a high abv. JaBier (1223), Capital City, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 31, 2009 Sampled as a bonus beer at the Avery tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits. Thanks to Dave for bringing this one to share. Amber pour with a thin tan head. Citrus and pine hop aroma with a sweet malt balance. Overly sweet flavor with some booze and earthy hops. Tastes undercarbonated. Not as much of a fan of this one as I thought I’d be after smelling it. noncaloric (617), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 26, 2009 Dark amber, almost mahogany, with a thin tan head, only temporary lace. Big aroma, big in both grapefruity hops and cream-soda caramel malts. Flavor is more citric hops, here more like mandarin orange, segueing into alcohol heat, like crystallized ginger, and backed by a somewhat cidery, somewhat nutty malt backbone. India Pale Wee Heavy. Tastes a bit over-brewed on the finish, a bit solventy here. For all the malt, this is surprisingly well attenuated; full, hot, and dry on the palate. I enjoy it. Double IPA fans would probably like it moreso. Lubiere (4536), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 23, 2009 A dark amber ale with a very thin off white head. An almost oily (you can almost smell the oilyness) caramel malt aroma, earthy, but the hops are burried under the mass of the malt. In mouth, a heavy oily I2PA, malty, with caramel and brown sugar, with very herbal hops, resinous and pinhey. A rich and warming ale. On tap at Jerry’s, Chicago, May 16 2009.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 22, 2009 Thanks to Bobby91w for this one! Pours a cloudy dark copper, with a small head. Nose of sweet, sticky brown sugar malts, countering (and somewhat overpowering) a big hop contingent, and covering the alcohol. WOO! Big brew! This one’s unbelievably thick, and the hops are much more present in the flavor, especially as the malts fade and the bitter aftertaste lingers. It’s an oaky, caramelly hop bomb that coats your mouth like no other. They went a bit overboard on the malts, and I think it’s actually too thick for this style (this is approaching 120 min. territory), but I will admit it covers the 13.6% remarkably well. Definitely enjoyed this one. garthicus (1304), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Appearance: Brown/orange, lots of white floaties, large orange head. Aroma: Wonderful hop, pineapple, yeast, caramel, malt and grapefruit. Flavour: HUGE hop bang, caramel, floral notes, sticky mouth feel, malt and yeast, nice long hoppy finish with barely a trace of alcohol.
