Nose is roasted marshmallow/burnt sugar, rich roasty malt, some inky darkness that I suppose is smoke. Flavor is more of that burnt sugar & roast, good toffee, light but present smoke, a twinge of hop. Long bittersweet slightly smoky finish. polomagnifico (534), Saginaw, Michigan, USA

Pitch black hue with a small fully diminishing tan head that left no lace. Flavor is salty, smokey, and creamy. Palate is soft and full bodied. Very nice and rich brew. Great aroma and great flavor. Best of the series. mcbackus (751), Merritt Island, Florida, USA

Pours a viscous black right out of the bottle with no light penetrating. With an aggressive pour, the head was a small, dense mocha that dissipated almost immediately leaving almost no lacing. The smell had only a hint of charcoal and hickory smoke in the background and was more heavily skewed to the sweet side with roasted malts, dark chocolate and dark fruits. The taste is sweet up front with the chocolate malts and dark fruit before giving was to the smoky finish which lingers through the finish into the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is creamy with very little carbonation and just sticks to the inside of my mouth. This is a drinkable but robust stout that I really enjoyed. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 16, 2008 Updated: Aug 17, 2008Bottle thanks to miketd, thanks man! Poured a thick black color with a thin tan head that receded to a ring. Aroma of smoked malt, chocolate, roast, and a hint of coffee. Sweet entry with hints of chocolate, molasses, and a hint of woody vanilla that transitions into a moderate roasted coffee flavor ending with a nice smoked malt presence. Smooth on the palate. Overall, better than I expected, and a fine offering from DH. HonkeyBra (1353), Lemont, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 16, 2008 This beer pours DARK, really really dark, with a reddish-tan head. A lot of smoke in the nose, some chocolate. Taste is fantastic. Rich, roasted malts, coffee, tobacco, chocolate, and a smokey finish. Thick luxurious mouthfeel. I picked this up kind of as an impulse buy as it was next to the register, but it turned out to be the best beer I bought that night. 502Flavors (621), Louisville, Kentucky, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 10, 2008 12 oz. bottle into pint glass. One of the best looking pours I have ever seen - a black oil pour with a great dark brown head - thicker pour than expected. The aroma is very chocolaty - dark milk chocolate - with a vanilla backbone and a coffee finish. Aroma is very full and rich with a complexity of subtle aromas that linger between these. While the aroma is dominated by chocolate, the flavor is dominated by roasted specialty malt and coffee characteristics. Bitter dry hops on the finish that work well with the bitter coffee notes. Medium to full bodied on the palate and decently coating; smooth with very subtle carbonation. Overall: this brew took me a bit by surprise; it is unbelievably good, but a bit confused. I am not getting much smoke and would definitely characterize this as an Imperial Stout and not as "A Smoked." Either way it is a must try.
