| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 16, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours black with a thick brown head. Aroma is of light smoke, chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste is of lighty roasted malt, sweet chocolate, and smoke. The smoke doesn’t overpower, it just mixes in well with the chocolate and the malt. Lingering taste of vanilla and some wood. Mouthfeel is very light due to the carbonation. Not bad. JaBier (1233), Capital City, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 15, 2009 12oz bottle shared by Ogglethorp. Black pour with a thin light brown head. Malty and roasty aroma that a stout should have, but subtle smoke in there too. Smoky malt flavor and a roasty coffee finish. Awesome stuff, because the smoke is subtle throughout. I don’t hate the beers that taste like ham, but I really appreciate the ones that are a bit toned down. chicagodri (1060), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 14, 2009 Draft @ Dark Horse. Pours black with brown head. Roasted malt, smoke, and chocolate in the nose. I almost wish it had more smoke in the flavor, I think it might have even had more chocolate instead. Decent beer though. jstraw (774), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Black with good, creamy brown head / Smokey, roast nose / Light to medium body, some chewiness, zippy carbonation, with good balance and finish / Flavors of roast malt, dark roast coffee, unsweetened chocolate, and just a hint of smoke / Solid, balanced, and restrained. flatmatt (224), Northville, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 1, 2009 Updated: Apr 3, 200912 oz bottle from a One, Too, Tres, Fore mixed pack from Merchant’s. Pours black with a small brown head that quickly disappears. Roasty aromas of chocolate with a small dose of smoke. The smoke comes across stronger in the flavor, accenting the roasty cocoa and coffee nicely. Smoke grows on the palate throughout the glass. It falls a touch flat compared to the first three members of the Dark Horse stout series, but it remains a very good stout. mspindler (323), Alta Loma, California, USA

Aroma is lightly smoky with some dark bitter chocolate. Flavor is the same. Seasoned wood, coffee and chocolate, very roasty. Mouthfeel is big, smooth and creamy and carbonation is decent. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 27, 2009 draft at sheffield’s. split this with nick yesterday. he observed that it has zero smoked character. i sensed a bit, but it was extremely remote, and i probably wouldn’t have even thought of smoke if i didnt know that going in. otherwise, the body and flavor were just like the 1 and 2. that is, thick and smooth, plenty of chocolate, reasonably well balanced, and quite delicious.
