Smoked chocolate aroma with some caramel and coffee drifting in. Full body, chewy, with minimal carbonation. There almost vanilla or licorice component to the taste, along with all the bits the taste inherits from the aroma. Dry finish with some espresso, smoke and ash but in moderate quantities. The smokiness is subtle, so anyone looking for an uber-smoky beer will be disappointed, but otherwise it’s a tasty beer. WakeandBake (431), Greenville, Michigan, USA

Aroma of dark chocolate, with hints of licorice and maybe dates; the smoke is very subtle,it is there but just a hint.Flavor is dark chocolate, and coffee, the smokey flavor is much more prominent than I would have expected from the aroma, notes of rasins, molasses, and wood as well; after the swallow, the smoke becomes even more prominent but never dominates and the finish has a tobacco and bitter coffee character to it. Medium body with light carbonation and an oily/slick mouthfeel, not sticky at all.Very drinkable,I could not put my glass down.
I knew I wanted to try this beer but knew nothing about it, I was blown away ! Nice job Dark Horse !

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 7, 2009 Black pour with a small, lasting, foamy, tan head. Moderate chocolate aroma with a balance of roasted malt and damp, smoky wood. The flavor is also chocolaty at first but then you quickly get a wave of dark roasted coffee, smoke, and wood. Creamy full body with subtle carbonation and a faint astringency. soccer290 (137), Highland Park, Illinois, USA

Wasn’t really sure what they meant by smoked stout, but was interested enough to get it. Pours a jet black color with a small dark tan head that dissipated quickly. Smells of smoke and chocolate and malt. Tastes of smoke, chocolate, roasted coffee. Very smooth going down, and leaves a residual smoke behind. Overall very good though. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 28, 2009 Pretty nice stout. This pours black with a small very dark brownish red head. Aromas of chocolate and smoke with some alcohol and raisins. The flavor has a lot of bitter black coffee character and the smokiness is very minimal. This is almost like some sort of very strong oatmeal stout. The bitterness is great and mixes well with dry fruit flavors. The texture is creamy. I expected more smoke, but it is fantastic anyway. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 27, 2009 Bottle thanks to polomagnifico! Pours dark brown with a slight tan head, down to a ring pretty quickly. Very milky chocolate (almost lactic) dominates the nose, but this has some fantastic balance: slight malt and smoke to round off the chocolate, then some nice plum/sugar qualities. Flavor is very smooth, mainly chocolate and some roasted malt, and more smoke than the nose, lingering into the finish. Really put together, and very reserved. It could definitely use more smoke for the smokeheads, but I like the refrain here, and it’s more a smoked imperial porter than anything else. wench (30), st. paul, Minnesota, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 24, 2009 Pours jet black with a 1 finger reddish brown head that has good retention and leaves specks of lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, smoke, some char, caramel and dark malt. Flavor is big on roast, chocolate, nice mild smoke, raw grain, burnt toast, over-cooked pancakes, burnt sugar and some dry grass notes. Finish is roast, smoke, mild bitterness, dark fruit coming in late, burnt toast and some herbal hops, some bittereness but just enough to balance it out. Palate is medium, slightly sticky and has a slightly chalky finish. Good stuff.
