Bottle thanks to polomagnifico!
Pours dark brown with a slight tan head, down to a ring pretty quickly. Very milky chocolate (almost lactic) dominates the nose, but this has some fantastic balance: slight malt and smoke to round off the chocolate, then some nice plum/sugar qualities. Flavor is very smooth, mainly chocolate and some roasted malt, and more smoke than the nose, lingering into the finish. Really put together, and very reserved. It could definitely use more smoke for the smokeheads, but I like the refrain here, and it’s more a smoked imperial porter than anything else.

Pours jet black with a 1 finger reddish brown head that has good retention and leaves specks of lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, smoke, some char, caramel and dark malt. Flavor is big on roast, chocolate, nice mild smoke, raw grain, burnt toast, over-cooked pancakes, burnt sugar and some dry grass notes. Finish is roast, smoke, mild bitterness, dark fruit coming in late, burnt toast and some herbal hops, some bittereness but just enough to balance it out. Palate is medium, slightly sticky and has a slightly chalky finish. Good stuff.

Pour is a flat looking black with no head at all. Aroma is some roasted malts but not much else. Flavor is again not much more than roasted malt and very heavy. There is no date on the label or anything to tell if this is old but i must have gotten a old bottle. There is hardly any smoke flavor and with so many high ratings i think i just got screwed. Will put this on the must try again list.

Found some old notes. (9/29/07). Bottle. Poured a deep brown black. Smoky chocolate nose. Flavors of sweet chocolate and burnt malt. A pretty good beer. Worth a re sample. Retasted (5/27/09). Bottle pours a jet black with a rich red brown head. Oak and roasted grains on the nose, hints of chocolate too. Lots of milk/lactose in flavor, some chocolate.

Bottle. Black pour. This is a delicious beer. I get some smoke on the nose, but nothing overwhelming at all. Great chocolate, coffee and cane syrup on the nose. Flavor is full and wonderful. The smoked malt give it great smoke tones that dance around the edges of your tongue and dont overpower the chocolate and molasses flavores. Really a damn nice beer.

Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Black in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas of flint, dark chocolate, coffee, and fruity English yeast. Fairly acidic dark malt character in the mouth, along with caramel, dark fruit, and a beef jerkey like smoke character. Medium bodied. Not as much smoke as I would have expected or liked, but the bottle might have been a bit old. Fairly good nonetheless.
