had with stumac and melanie ... second session ... quite smokey and a bit meaty, bold for a oatmeal/sweet stout ... dark as a struck match in a box wearing a diving suit under water ... slick and oily, chewy stuff here ... sweet vanilla notes ... what did stu spill again??

Courtesy of CigarCityBrew. Pours dark darkness with dark brown edges and thin tan head. The aroma is roasty, mildly burnt, oatmeal like, black licorice, some vanilla and some chocolate. The taste is rich, smooth and yummy. I get roasty to burntness. More yum. I also get chocolate smoothness, coffee and sweet caramel. Wow, everything comes together nicely. Very very tasty brew.

The Dan Journal #198. Tasted 7/10/08. 12oz bottle. Dark brown hue with a khaki head. Aromas of raisins, toffee, coffee and a woody character. Full bodied with a bitter, rich and sticky palate. Vanilla creamy flavors. Really good!

Bottle. Pours pitch black with an extremely dark dan head. The aroma has lots of a dark fruit tang mixed in with roasty, smokiness. Oatmeal as well as bitter cocoa and hints of coffee is also noticeable in the aroma. I was a little bit surprised at how light the brew felt to the tongue. It also has a little bit of oiliness to it that is best attributed to coffee oils. The initial flavour is mildly sweet of darker fruits combined with some chocolate. Shortly after, though, a light bitterness grabs the tongue as the cocoa and roastiness begin to burst. The tangy dark fruits continue to be quite noticeable. It isn’t until the dark fruit flavours start to diminish when the oatmeal begins to surface. Towards the finish, the dark fruit merely becomes a shadow as oatmeal becomes dominant. Cocoa, light coffee, and roasty flavours merely complement the oatmeal. There is a slightly noticeable bitterness in the finish as well. This is very tasty and there’s a lot going on in the flavour.

Nice opaque pour, roasted aroma from a nice tan head. Good roasted malt, just a hint of dark chocolate. Dark Horse likes to hop their brews, this has a hint of that, not too much though. Very good representation of the style.

Bottle from Styles. A decent appearance, although it didn’t jump out as outstanding by looking at it. After that, though, a darned nice brew. Excellent robust body and mouthfeel opens up and fortifies an outstanding and rounded flavor of light coffee and cocoa chocolate, very nice roasty touch and oatmeal finish. A solid oatmeal stout. Thanks so much, Chris.

Bottle cold. Very dark to black with a dense, short-lived head. Nice aroma of fresh apples and new mown grass. Sharp malt with creamy mouth. The oatmeal quality is apparent in every sip and a sour flavor with small hop bitter gets the job done for this rather unique ale. I’ll drink all four!

Bottle courtesy of someone from the Tampa crew. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, and oats. Taste is the same as aroma with hints of bitter chocolate. Medium thin mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and very well hidden alcohol. Very good.
