Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Bottle:   Rich caramel color, hazy, thin sudsy beige head, spotty lacing.   Rich coffee beans on the nose, otherwise somewhat of a heavy sweetish malt presense.   Sweet malty tongue, quite coffee oriented.   Warming on the back.   Not as malty as I thought it would be.   Remains somewhat sweet start to finish.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Warming finish.   Could stand to be a bit maltier as the coffee does dominate a bit.   Not out of balance, still quite good, just could stand to be more of a Doppelbock instead of a coffee flavored lager.   Thanks Chris!

Murky, dark plum colored with a medium tan head. Giant roasted coffee aroma is moderately green and herbal, somewhat reminiscent of dried leaves, with mild smoke, charred wood and mild toffee. Mildly bitter, mildly sweet flavor, coffee roast is most prevalent with earthy leaves towards the tail end. Not sure that I would have pinpointed this as a doppelbock - comes off more as a thin coffee stout to me. Still, it is rather drinkable. Cool two-headed Baphomet label is pretty metal.

I took two ambiens like 10 minutes ago and already I’m feeling upside down. So, I poured this from the floor and it traveled upwards through the air an unassuming brown color and seemed to settle at the bottom of an upside glass in a thin shade of light tan. Its weird that the beer is defying gravity right now. the nose was very much coffee grains and not very much of anything else. just coffee grains, which could have come from a 2-day old filter or 2 hour old filter, at this point it doesn’t matter because it’s upside down and that’s taking all my attention right now. The flavors are like sucking liquid through a filter with caked on coffee grains...which way you should be sucking is beyond me at this point...the beer underneath is so covered in coffee grains that it’s like any normal women walking the streets of the middle east...could be good, could be ghastly, who knows and who cares, you’re honey. it amazes me how fast these ambiens take to work...seriously, im allready having a nice dissociate high of if it...my computer screens seems to be slowly melting away from down...that it until i hit the end the senteance hit and hit return and then it bounced back up, like like netruss but not fun. I feel lile im a omn aaboatginng. Sample at the Eurostash II tasting on 12/12/09: This brew pours a murky brownish-amber color with a thin off-white head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee and caramel malt. Medium, dry body with flavors of fresh and moderately bitter coffee, plus some roasted malt and raisin. The finish is roasty with a bitter coffee aftertaste. Overall the beer is pretty one-sided with the coffee flavor and could benefit from some more balance, but it is a decent brew nonetheless.

Fleck ridden cherrywood with a thin tan head, slowly fading leaving a ring of lace. Aroma of deep roasted coffee, sweet roasted malt and a touch of alcohol. Taste of coffee, dark roasted malt, dark pitted fruit and malt. Semi acidic in nature with mild roasted malt bitterness. Not overly sweet.

Appearance: Pours a dark auburn red with no head. A small amount of light can pass through, and with it you can see rising bubbles. Aroma: Spent coffee grinds and roasted malt. Taste: Strong black diner coffee, bread crust, pumpernickel, and slightly sour cherry. The coffee flavor linges well past the sip, and it’s pretty much all you taste for the rest of the beer. Mouthfeel: Full and thick. Overall: I didn’t care for the mix of coffee and doppelbock.

Pours a clear, reddish brown with a thin and quickly fading tan head. Nose is dominated by the coffee, as is the flavor. Despite being somewhat one dimensional, this isn’t a bad beer at all. I’d describe it as having a more pure coffee taste than you might get out of the many stouts that feature coffee flavors. And, in that respect, it’s tasty and interesting. This might make for a suitable alternative to an imperial or sweet stout...if you wanted something a bit lighter.
