Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear deep reddish copper color with a fine beige head that fizzes away. The aroma is dark caramel malt with a touch of sweetness, lots of roasted and coffee comes in to take over the initial sweetness. This is more like an iced coffee aroma than the typical hot black coffee found in many beers. The flavor is sweet dark caramel flavor balanced with an iced coffee character, light earthy notes, and a touch of bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied at best. The coffee didn’t work as well for me in this beer as it would in a stout. I don’t think the body or the other flavors were present to support the coffee in this beer.

strong java aroma with some plain grainy malts. flavor is a bitter long lasting coffee, perhaps the most pure expression of coffee (or tastiest) i’ve ever experienced in any style of beer. some level of sweetness as well, but its real character is lost amongst the joe. big crunch of chocolate covered espresso beans not unlike breakfast stout. little to no dopplebock character but this is too delicious for me to care.

Cloudy auburn pour w/ 1.5 finger head, overpowering coffee aroma coated in jalapeno brine, really aggressive, almost obnoxious coffee flavor. Can’t decide if I love it or hate it, intrigued or put off, interesting and unique enough that I’d say you have to try it.

Wow, lots of jalapeno and bitterness. Sour and sharp. Not really reminds me off coffee. Cold and dead on the tongue. Other oat and feedbag malts. Some hops rounding the end. Pretty good, but I’m not sure I would actually get this again. The initial taste was really off putting. Once that first sip is done, it does get better. I’d suggest letting this warm up.

12oz bottle from Archer Liquors. Pours a very deep ruby with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma’s malty, a bit nutty along with some toffee and light herbal hops. Flavour’s malty with coffee, a touch of smoke, toffee and light bitter finish. Average bodied. Pretty good.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of fresh, bitter coffee, and a hint of caramel. Poured very deep amber/copper/brown in color with a very small, tan head that lasted around the edges only. Cloudy. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of fresh, bitter coffee, and slight caramel. Medium body. Slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Fresh, bitter coffee finish. Not much of a Doppelbock. 7.5%ABV is hidden.
