Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark, hazy caramel color with a light tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee beans backed up with caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is straight coffee again, with some caramel backup. Honestly, I’m not totally sold on the flavor combination, but it is a refreshing approach to the coffee beer, and I definitely applaud Dark Horse for that.

Pours a deep clear dark amber, almost mahogany with a thin lasting creamy off white head. Aroma is upfront with lots of coffee, at first it seems nice and fresh and a surprise to find in a doppelbock but after a while the aroma goes to a bit ashy and turnns almost to old coffee grains left out in the filter- some caramel and toasted lager malts coming through. Flavor is not quite so dominated by the coffee and it seems a bit more well integrated and not as harsh or old tasting- more munich and toasty vienna malts come trhough the moderately fresh coffee flavor. Pretty smooth finish though and easy to drink.

Sampled from 12-oz bottle and shared by Badgerben. Pours a hazy dark cola brown brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and thin off-white ring. Aroma of caramel malt and dark coffee, some chocolate and a hint of pear. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of mostly coffee and roasted caramel malt. Finish continues the dark coffee aftertaste that hides most other flavors.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Acknud. Pours a cloudy mahogany color with a 1/2" off white head. Nose is coffee and caramel. Mouthfeel is a bit thin with an apprpriate amount of carbonation. The first few sips were strong coffee, but then the coffee flavor begins to lose its intensity and stays in the background while the caramel sweetness takes over. Good sipping brew, though I probably wouldn’t want more than one at a sitting.

Somewhat hazy brown pour with off white head. The nose is roasted malt and touches of coffee. The flavor is sweet carmel malt, moderately bitter hop bite and substantial roasted coffee notes. Pretty decent beer.

Bottle. Cloudy, dark brown pour with burgundy highlights. Short, off-white head, mostly diminishing. Aroma dominated by coffee beans and caramel with a hint of dough and chocolate. The flavor is heavily sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. The finish is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Thin body with a watery texture. Lively carbonation. This is a watery, but aromatic, cup of coffee with five teaspoons of sugar and maybe a little cream thrown in. Interesting and tasty, but the sweetness rides on the edge of being cloying. Don’t think I could drink more than one at a sitting.

Thin pour. Looks like cofee from the pot. Brown. Thin tan head that quickly disippates. Cofee, light fruit, hops on the nose. Carbonated thin mouthfeel with coffee up front. Pretty dominating over anything sweet. Tastes like a cold cup of coffee. Unique. Another breakfast beer.
