The aroma picked up day-old, but still yummy coffee grounds first with rich, drawn caramel not too far behind.. light wafts of sour oak and earth on the back. The flavor showed a little more of that sourness which wasn’t necessarily bad, but was kind of annoying.. sweet caramel, brown sugar, and toffee sweetness at the core with a dry, ashy coffee impression on the sides.. tacky and warm at the finish with more caramel and a medium-skinned fruit bouquet. Heavier-bodied and sour on the palate with low carbonation.. light smoke and a longer finish. This was decent. bdigital (586), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 26, 2008 Bottle: Courtesy of major0429...pours a cloudy amber with no head. This was very surprising...the coffee seems to hit right off the bat, some notes of caramel malt and a bit of brown sugar noted as well. Very coffee dominant flavor with dark malts, toffee and the brown sugar coming through nicely. MrBendo (1042), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | May 25, 2008 Thanks to pepsican for the bottle. I was sorry to see that the bottle art seems to have discontinued the ’spawn of satan’ artwork for a more modern perkulator/rocketship design. Hazy burnt orange color with a medium head. From the aroma, I would have been convinced that this was a smoked in a blind tasting; reminiscent of bacon and caramel. (Doesn’t sound too bad for those of us who like our breakfast meats with plenty of maple syrup). .This flavor combo works less well in beer. The smoke is less evident In the taste, and there’s some coffee, but overall, this is a mess. Rciesla (3610), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with dark tan head. Aroma is caramel, coffee, and brown sugar. Flavor is light coffee and the sweet sugar comes through with little hop character or etoh noticed. creamy and drinkable. Beerlando (2314), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 5, 2008 Pours a lightly hazy, dark caramel brown color. A small, foamy, khaki colored head settles to a thin, swirly film with a prominent edge. Minimal, spotty lacing noted. The aroma is simple but inviting, with big, roasty coffee notes showing atop a lightly smoked caramel malt base. A touch of cream is present as well, adding smoothness. The flavor is really well balanced, with the lightly sweet, toasty malts being perfectly complimented by roasty coffee and spicy, earthy hops. Its not all that complex, but man is it tasty and easy to drink. Smooth, medium-plus body with a creamy palate. Lingering coffee roast on the finish. Damn good brew. nimbleprop (844), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 3, 2008 Got this 12oz bottle as an extra in a trade with mtdshn. Thanks Mark! Pours a translucent, nearly opaque deep brown with a thin cream colored head. If not for the tight bubbles you might think it was a cappuccino. Very sugary aroma that has a bit of nuts and brown sugar and faint coffee. Flavor is very sweet, a little sour with flavors of brown sugar, caramel and coffee. The coffee flavors are only a compliment and certainly aren’t the whole show. Finish has some lasting coffee bitterness and is fairly dry. If not for the name it might be possible to miss the coffee component of this beer entirely. That said, this was still enjoyable. dukefan (173), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 17, 2008 On tap at the brewery, 2007. Like great coffee with extra sugar in it. Malty, sweety, a great mouthfeel. After taste is a solid coffee flavor. A great, great blend. AllAboutStout (605), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 8, 2008 Pours brown in color with a nice quarter inch head that recedes quickly to nothing. Not a whole lot going on in the nose, barely detectable slight coffee.
This is a very interesting combination. Decent doppelbock with just a slight amount of coffee. I’m liking it. Decent mouthfeel.
