Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a deep brown body and a small tan head. Aroma is strongly coffee, with metal and minerals. Taste as far as I can tell is just coffee, with some earth and maybe some candied pecans. Light bubbles.

Dark pour with off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Flavor reflects the aroma and finishes crisp and a little dry. I like this beer.

Bottle at Chris´grill party. Pours brown with a tiny off-white head. Moderate sweetness with a light bitterness and light acidic - vinegarish notes. Malty aromas of molasses and coffee. Light herbal hops notes. Hints of leather and cask wood. Also hints of green pepper fruits. Medium bodied with a thin, oily mouthfeel. Softish carbonation. Bitter finish.

The Dan Journal #262. Tasted 4/6/09. 12oz bottle. Dark with a reddish hue. Trace ring of bone white head. Aromas of weak coffee and toffee. Full bodied with a sweet and smokey flavor. Bitter effervescence with tangy hops. Smooth brew. The coffee note hits the palate late. Original take! Nice.

I had this on tap in a pint glass, but unfortunately I didn’t take good tasting notes for it beyond the numbers.

12oz Bottle – Trade – JJClark
Aroma: Big coffee aroma with dark roasted malt lingering through.
Appearance: Dark brown in color, Clear with a thin head.
Flavor: Big coffee flavor this also still had the malt and light spices for added flavors.
Palate: Dry Coffee Finish, with a Good Mouthfeel.
Overall: This was a very impressive brew. Loved the flavor and it was not too over the top with flavor. The actual malt was still getting through.

12oz - Aroma is different than I expected, leather, dank coffee, toffee and burnt malts. Pours dark ruby with a small head and great lacing. Flavor is burnt coffee with a mean aftertaste. Palate is dry and sticky. Not so good.
