Monroe1ato (12), Indiana, USA Jun 21, 2009 Pours dark maroon with a large medium sized beige head. Smell is of sweet maltiness and nice strong coffee. Taste is about what I’d expect from the name. Rich and malty as expected from a dopplebock with a nice coffee flavor as well. Finishes more malty with little coffee flavor at the end. Pretty nice and drinkable. Medium to slightly rich body with good carbonation. Fairly noticeable tartness in the finish that detracted somewhat. Pours a light brown with no head in my glass, however Sam and Dennetta had a small head with some lace in their glasses, so I’m guessing it’s my trusty tasters fault. Very low carbonation on this one. The aroma had lots of vegetable character, kind of like opening my crisper drawer in my fridge and finding something not so fresh, and some coffee aromas to follow, this is an old familiar sensory experience for my I’m afraid. The flavor has tons of coffee, like folders at grandmas house. There is a nice sweet maltiness here too and for a dopplebock there is almost not alcohol traceable in it, so that makes it a pretty smooth drinking libation. I feel like this could be great with some tweaking, but as it stands... it’s ok. madvike (301), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Jun 16, 2009 Bottle - Pours dark amber with virtually no head. Waaay heavy on the coffee, with some nutty and smoky flavors in there--but mostly coffee. The taste is the same, with coffee, smoke, and malt. It’s a little hot on the finish...there’s a lot of warmth there. Biggest downside is it’s thin and watery--not what I’m looking for in a doppelbock. Overall pretty disappointing, though maybe the two I’ve got in my cellar will change my mind later. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Jun 14, 2009 12oz bottle. Cloudy amber/brown with a big tan head. Malty aroma with some fruit, coffee and unfortunately some vegetable notes. Flavor is devoid of the veggies; just a nice coffee and caramel blend. Not bad. The nose is coffee and roasted malt. The taste is caramel, roasted malt, folgers instant coffee and some chocolate with some boozy irish coffee in the finish. Medium prickly mouthfeel despite the lack of head. Interested brew. I enjoyed this one. Thanks again guys! Kevin (1917), Colorado, USA Jun 2, 2009 interesting concept. coffee dopplebock. it’s been a good night so far, thought i was going to have sit in the rain for a concert, but rescheduled, now i’m watching a very nice cubs game so far at least. 4-0 with a leadoff hit in the 7th. wells may just get his first win. expected a darker color here. deep red sort of maroon, with a fluffly nicotine stained head. whew, this smells kind of bad. like smokey pickles and cold coffee. (fucking bastard len caspar, don’t jinx the pitcher, asshole) first impression, i don’t like it, sweet thin body an unpleasant cornflake note. there is a bit of creamed up coffee that comes out in the finish. a hint of toffee. damn this aroma is a rough one, a mild grape note is mixed in there. final impression, i don’t like it. however i like the fact they tried it. MrPickles (108), Wisconsin, USA Jun 1, 2009 Acquired a bottle in a trade with Madvike. I am a big fan of both doppelbocks and coffee beers, although I have never had a coffee doppelbock before. Not sure if that will influence this ratting one way or the other. Pours a murky brown color with a small beige head. The aroma contains some caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and chocolate. The flavor contains a lot of caramel along with some toffee, chocolate, and brown sugar with a strong coffee finish. It’s not all that complex, but I think it is tasty, yes I think, and easy to drink. Damn good brew, but I think that I am going to need another to tell for sure. Is that a bad thing?
