Kevster (222), Bradenton, Florida, USA Jun 1, 2009 12 oz. bottle: Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves nice lacing. Malty aroma has the coffee and expresso. Flavor starts out sweet and finishes with a chocolate coffee bean candy flavor. Another good one from Dark Horse. General66 (167), Streator, Illinois, USA May 29, 2009 12 ounce bottle. I did not know what to expect from this one... I am not a huge doppelbock fan but I like Dark Horse. Pours a cola-like brown color with a half finger width white head that disappears quickly. It also had a decent amount of carbonation. The aroma was a very pleasant mix of espresso coffee and sweet malts. I actually really enjoyed the aroma... the coffee smell deviated from the norm in my opinion. The taste was a very nice mix of coffee and sweet malt also. I will agree that it was a bit boring, but it was definitely tasty. It had a lighter mouth feel than I would have liked also. Overall though a very enjoyable beer. If you like coffee, give this one a whirl. vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA May 25, 2009 I’ve liked about everything from dark horse, so I guess the odd were that something wouldn’t set right with me - this was the one. Pours crimson / bronze with a tan head. The aroma has an expresso coffee blast along with the sweetness of a dopplebock along with syrupy bown sugar - none are traits I enjoy, but they didn’t even seem good for what they were. Medium slick cloying body with light carbonation. The flavor starts with an over-abundance of expresso. there is some sweet malt, but it is fairly hidden. I don’t need this one again. bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA May 17, 2009 Pours rubied brown with an off-white ring of foam. Dry coffee-grounds aroma and taste. Light body and carbonation. thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA May 17, 2009 Pour is a dark red with no head. Aroma is some dark fruit with a bit of the coffee followed by some chocolate. Flavor is again some chocolate at first then comes some dark fruit then a small touch of the coffee. There are lots of things going on in this beer and each sip brings something different. WakeandBake (422), Greenville, Michigan, USA May 15, 2009 Bottle. A hazy dark copper pour with a small off white head, spotty lacing, madium carbonation. Aroma is spicy and malty, lots of coffee and a bit of chocolate and smoke. Flavor is So fucking good, huge malty, grainy roasty notes with a bit of coffee and hop bitterness, toffee, nuts, and earthy rasins, medium sweet, full creamy mouthfeel, super drinkable, long malty spicy coffee finish.
I love Dark Horse. shawnm213 (884), South Bend, Indiana, USA May 13, 2009 12 oz bottle. pours a deep red wtih a fluffy lasting beige head that leaves some lace on the glass. Aroma is of caramel, COFFee, alcohol, caramel, Coffee, alcohol, and brown sugar. Finish is coffee and alcohol. Smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Tasty! shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA May 7, 2009 4/25/2009: Dark Horse Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock has a weak coffee aroma and is grainy with more of that "green" coffee flavor to it. This beer is okay, but I was really hoping/expecting something more out of it!
Sample from bottle at Dark Lord Day 2009. Rating #153 for this beer.
