wmubronco1992 (176), Coldwater, Michigan, USA Mar 31, 2009 Bottle - Pours a dark black with hints of red. Almost no head. Very little lacing. Strong coffee aroma. Tastes of coffee and licorice. Nice lingering mouthfeel. Interesting beer. Not one of my personal Darkhorse favorites, but I appreciate its uniqueness. Never had a bad beer from this brewery. polomagnifico (532), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Mar 26, 2009 Bottle. Aroma smells like coffee beans shoved up someone’s ass. Appearance looks like that same person had diarrhea and then took a 12oz shit 6hrs later. Flavor is not that bad. Palate is nice, smooth and diarrhea flat. Quite unique overall. Would love to try it fresh! DrnkMcDermott (1831), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Mar 23, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Presentable mahogany brown doppelbock pour, thin collar of foam around edge. Big smell of lightly-roasted coffee. And a big coffee taste, with matching sweetness, like those coffee-flavored candies. Cherry and other fruit overtones make this more of a coffee cordial than a Kahlua. Nut roast bock malts in just the right proportion contribute much of the sweetness. I’m just liking this one a lot. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 15, 2009 Bottle. Pours cloudy brown with a tan head. Awesome aroma, strong coffee dominates. Chocolate, coffee in the flavor. More coffee in the aroma than in the flavor - but still pretty decent brew. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Mar 15, 2009 bottle. thanks bri. strange chestnut pour with thin head. aroma is very malty, sweet chocolate and coffee. dark coffee, light nuttiness, chocolate, roasted malt. earthy funkiness in dry finish. I don’t know how if I like this or not. a bit strange. bhensonb (4182), Woodland, California, USA Mar 12, 2009 Bottle from Acknud. Like where does he get this stuff? Looks like a miracle from California perspective. Pours a clear dark ruby color with a temporary beige head. Aromas of coffee over dark caramel. Full bodied with fizzy carbonation. Flavor is coffee and chocolate - but it doesn’t seem mocha. Seems well balanced. It’s neither sweet nor dry. Kind of astringent. Rather mouth smacking. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Mar 12, 2009 Wow, who in the what now? At face, this sounds like an interesting and maybe appropriate idea... Pours brown to garnet with a thin offwhite head. The nose is sweet with malt and a touch of coffee and chocolate. Changes the character a bit. Very doppelbocky, don’t get me wrong, with just a touch of coffee. Lightly creamy. Creamy, but lighter body. The flavor is in line with the nose, though perhaps just a bit astringent. Sweeter, maybe a bit of alcohol, some light roast. Lingering toasty bitterness. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Mar 4, 2009 Bottle, have waited for this for a while. Room-filling sweet malt and overabundant coffee bitterness, roasted malt and grain and a smokey, peaty touch. Dark ruby pour with a lacing, thickly rocky tan head. Taste is a thick Doppelbock malt profile with a little alcohol showing, dark beany espresso, ashy with hard-bop roast and heavy, aggressive carbonation. Sticky and lightly metallic, dry and earthy aftertaste. Spice is in the back, way under the toffee and light smoke. This is an utter trainwreck of clashing styles, and ultimately very confusing; however, the DB appears to be much better than the coffee component.
