drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Mar 3, 2009 Taste: Little to no coffee. Lots of Doppelbock. Sweet and malty Dopplebock. But when I go to drink, then I get the aroma of coffee in my nose. Nice, but not far off a bock in general. I want coffee in the taste as well. Had on tap, and I should probably revisit soon. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 18, 2009 courtesy of imperialking
Pours dark brown with off-white head.
Aroma is loaded with coffee and a light lactose / mocha nose.
Taste is filled with roasted/torrefied coffee, light caramel malts with light bitter mouthfeel and finish. Possible hints of some dark fruits.
Overall this one is loaded with coffee. No abv indicated but the palate was warming.
Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Feb 17, 2009 Bottle.
Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown, unfiltered.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, coffee, husks/vegetables, cookie).
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, husky.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Quite vegetal/husky in both aroma and finish. The coffee character is also not particularly inviting, like stale grounds. Nice mouthfeel though.. GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Feb 13, 2009 Bottle generously shared by dmunroe.
Poured a dark cola color with a small beige head that fades to a collar fairly quickly and leaves minimal lacing.
Big roasted coffee smell to start with a little bit of malts underneath. Hops are barely detectable. It’s definitely all about the coffee in the nose.
The taste is a bit sweeter and more balanced than the aroma with coffee still playing a major role but with the sweet caramel malts forming a strong backbone. Hops are a bit more present than in the aroma.
The mouthfeel is smooth with strong carbonation.
This is an extremely unique doppelbock and as a big coffee lover, this one really worked well for me. A great beer. Bartzilla (441), San Diego, California, USA Feb 11, 2009 Shared a bottle at Blind Lady with a couple other folks. Pretty tasty. Not too huge on the coffee and finishes a lot cleaner than I expected it to. Kinda sweet, actually. I’d drink this again. imadeadguy (378), back in NJ!, New Jersey, USA Feb 7, 2009 12oz. served into Duvel tulip glass. Pour is deep brown with small quick deminishing caramel colored head. Aromas of coffee, caramel, and some molasses. Flavor is upfront with loads of coffee, roasted malts, and finishing with a small amount of warming alcohol. I would say this one is a straight up coffee bomb. I could drink this right when I wake up every morning. Very impressed. badgerben (3584), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Jan 30, 2009 Dark brown color with a medium head. Aroma of freshly ground coffee. A little bitter upfront, more from coffee than hops. Plenty of coffee in this one. The sweet malt blends pretty well with it. flatmatt (221), Northville, Michigan, USA Jan 30, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours dark, hazy caramel color with a light tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee beans backed up with caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is straight coffee again, with some caramel backup. Honestly, I’m not totally sold on the flavor combination, but it is a refreshing approach to the coffee beer, and I definitely applaud Dark Horse for that.
