Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

I really appreciated this beer for what it was, experimental and over the top. Tasted a lot like a quality iced coffee with some nice fruity/floral notes to go with the heavy coffee. I presume they utilized an island coffee like Kona or Sumatra. Very nice flavor that finishes very clean. tasty, though calling this a doppelbock may be a stretch.

Bottle acquired via trade with belgiumtripel...THANKS MIKE!!! Mahogany pour with a mocha colored head. Coffee forward in the nose...dark roast with toffee and caramel. Flavor also exhibits some cocoa. Somewhat thin but tasty.

Thanks once again to Honkeybra. Interesting and complex. Lots of coffee flavor, with some chocolate coming through once it warms up Wish the malt sweetness would come through a little more. A cool experiment with beer, and I give em credit for that one. It is dynamic and cool, but still falls short as far as "would I want to try this again.” I think once is enough.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear deep reddish copper color with a fine beige head that fizzes away. The aroma is dark caramel malt with a touch of sweetness, lots of roasted and coffee comes in to take over the initial sweetness. This is more like an iced coffee aroma than the typical hot black coffee found in many beers. The flavor is sweet dark caramel flavor balanced with an iced coffee character, light earthy notes, and a touch of bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied at best. The coffee didn’t work as well for me in this beer as it would in a stout. I don’t think the body or the other flavors were present to support the coffee in this beer.

A wispy light tan head barely forms, then disappears. The body is a murk caramel brown and when backlit has awesome glowing blood red hues beneath. Looks pretty lively and spot-on for the style, pretty overall. The nose is startling, with grassy hops boldly jumping the crest of coffee and caramel malt breaching the rim of the glass. Doughy bread, scorched caramel, cream, wet coffee grounds and earthiness are all reserved but steady. This is a strange concoction. Alcohol is very lightly detectable. Cereal grain brings in the rear. Grain and graham cracker notes lead in the flavor. Light spice and hoppiness follow, a sweet tasting blend. Coffee is only of mild to medium power and is just an interesting flavor addition. this tastes like an early test batch that still needs tweaking. Different is great but this is rather uninteresting. The palate is lightly prickly with spice and nicely and evenly carbonated, lightly sticky and justy shy of medium bodied. The finish is bready, coffee grounds and vanilla lingering. The mouthfeel is great and I could drink this all day but it’s not a very agreeable aromatic or flavor profile.

Bottle. Pours cloudy brown with a tan head. Awesome aroma, strong coffee dominates. Chocolate, coffee in the flavor. More coffee in the aroma than in the flavor - but still pretty decent brew.
