Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Thanks to pepsican for the bottle. I was sorry to see that the bottle art seems to have discontinued the ’spawn of satan’ artwork for a more modern perkulator/rocketship design.
Hazy burnt orange color with a medium head. From the aroma, I would have been convinced that this was a smoked in a blind tasting; reminiscent of bacon and caramel. (Doesn’t sound too bad for those of us who like our breakfast meats with plenty of maple syrup).
.This flavor combo works less well in beer. The smoke is less evident In the taste, and there’s some coffee, but overall, this is a mess.

Thick dense caramel mud in color with little head. Smell is mild and sweet and a hint of smoky malt. Taste is very sweet and bock-like but mostly watery overall. Smoky flavor and finish. Pretty decent but not great.

Tap at Cole’s. Brown body, medium head, hops in the nose. Initially, I thought the server brought the wrong beer, but as it warmed, some coffee character emerged.

Bottle from Pepsican. Strong fresh coffee aroma with light smoke is the aroma. This beer had good maliness to it. Light dark fruit and grape juice notes followed by a nice fresh coffee finish.

Wow, who in the what now? At face, this sounds like an interesting and maybe appropriate idea... Pours brown to garnet with a thin offwhite head. The nose is sweet with malt and a touch of coffee and chocolate. Changes the character a bit. Very doppelbocky, don’t get me wrong, with just a touch of coffee. Lightly creamy. Creamy, but lighter body. The flavor is in line with the nose, though perhaps just a bit astringent. Sweeter, maybe a bit of alcohol, some light roast. Lingering toasty bitterness.

12 oz bottle, pours a clear brown with a light beige head. aroma of mostly coffee but some bock-like elements as well - sweet malt and clean germanic yeast characteristics as well. malty flavor, balanced profile of coffee, chocolate, dark raspberry, very reminiscent of a coffee porter. not thick, but not thin, with a lightly noticeable alcohol element. an enjoyable beer.
