Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

12oz bottle. Pours dark reddish copper with fizzy tan head. Aroma is strong with coffee, malt, caramel and touch of chocolate. Flavor is malty with coffee dominating palate with notes of caramel, chocolate and light alcohol. Light mouthfeel and light carbonation. I really do not care for coffee beers in general but this is better than what I expected it to be.

Bottle thanks to miketd. Poured a nice copper brown color with a thin beige head. Aroma of roasted coffee. All I really get out of the flavor is roasted coffee also. A bit one dimensional, but definitely different. I have been wanting to try something from this brewery for a while, thanks for hooking me up Mike.

Not bad. Amber pour with a 1 inch head. Sediment in bottom. Heavy coffee aroma. Taste is a blend of coffee and sweet malt. Nice little alcohol kick as well.

12oz bottle from Archer Liquors. Pours a very deep ruby with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma’s malty, a bit nutty along with some toffee and light herbal hops. Flavour’s malty with coffee, a touch of smoke, toffee and light bitter finish. Average bodied. Pretty good.

Muddy mahogany with fair tan head / Rich nose of wine, coffee, and tobacco / Medium body, chewy, moderately sweet, with good balance of big malts and hops, and with long finish / Winey flavors of coffee, oak, semisweet chocolate, and apple / Terrific.

Pours a deep dark hazelnut brown with coffee colored edgesand a 1.5 finger yellowish beige head that slowly fades into a thin lasting ring. Not much in the way of lacing. Deep roasted cofee aroma with roasted taost notes, nut, milk chocolate and slight lactic creaminess. Rich roasty flavor that becomes a bit more prominent as it warms up. Roasted smokey toasted nut with some slight lactic creaminess. Hazlenut, smoked malt, creamy milk chocolate, slight spice character and subtle hops. A bit thin for my liking but not to where is has too much of an affect on the beer. Nice balance of coffee, dark fruit notes and chocolate. The roasted character is not overbearing, which is a nice change of ace, adding complexity and avoiding the one dimensionality of many coffee beers. ABV well masked makng it pretty easy to drink.

Pours a very light looking coffee color. Aroma smells like coffee, too. Add some ice and I may have a iced perkulator coffee doppelbock. Or better yet blend it with some ice for a perkulator frappacino. I digress. Flavor profile is mostly coffee and body is very light. There was no head. Overall I liked this beer probably because I really like beer and coffee. If you fall into this category you’ll probably like this beer, too.

12 zo bottle: It’s been a while since I rated a beer so here I go. Aroma has a really nice ground coffee scent to it. roasted malt characteristics, and some caramel aroma’s as well. Pours a very cloudy brownish/black almost like coffee with a small off tan head that didsipates into nothing after about a minute. Taste is coffee of course, nice roasted malt characteristic, soemwhat nutty, caramel, and light sticky on the tongue. Palate is very lgihtly carbonated with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Overall, I like coffee so this is right up my alley. The doppelbock characteristics do get drowned out slightly by the coffee, but I like it all this same. Cheers!
