Coffee nose. Coffee makes the first impression on the palate, and lingers before giving way to sweet brown sugars and burnt caramels. Earthy finish. Lacks the heavy, dull breads and toffee of most doppelbocks. In fact, nothing about this beer really screams "doppelbock." That said, I found Perkulator tasty, but it will probably be a disappointment for those looking for something true to style. jsquire (2121), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 23, 2007 Out of the bottle, with a different label. Ruby colored beer with a thin, whispy slick of a head. I expected stronger coffee aroma, but it was a pretty subtle sweet coffee nose that got stronger as it warmed. Sweet toffee and lightly toasted grains over a bitter coffee that only got more intrusive as it warmed. Some acidity and fruitiness, but I’m not sure a coffee doppelbock is a good use of coffee. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 25, 2009 I’ve liked about everything from dark horse, so I guess the odd were that something wouldn’t set right with me - this was the one. Pours crimson / bronze with a tan head. The aroma has an expresso coffee blast along with the sweetness of a dopplebock along with syrupy bown sugar - none are traits I enjoy, but they didn’t even seem good for what they were. Medium slick cloying body with light carbonation. The flavor starts with an over-abundance of expresso. there is some sweet malt, but it is fairly hidden. I don’t need this one again. patrick767 (2051), fort wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 21, 2008 tap at the Dark Horse 4 Elf festival - It is hard to get past my prior experience that a coffee beer should be a stout or a porter, but this dark amber beer works. The aroma is heavy on the coffee with some rich malt lurking underneath. The coffee flavor is assertive without completely overwhelming the malty dopplebock goodness. It is full bodied, lightly carbonated, and rather interesting. Granted I have to say that I still would prefer a good coffee stout/porter. bitbucket (2036), Kirkland, Washington, USA

Smell is of sweet maltiness and nice strong coffee. Taste is about what I’d expect from the name. Rich and malty as expected from a dopplebock with a nice coffee flavor as well. Finishes more malty with little coffee flavor at the end. Pretty nice and drinkable. Medium to slightly rich body with good carbonation. Fairly noticeable tartness in the finish that detracted somewhat. sebletitje (1995), Tampa, Florida, USA

Pours dark brown with off-white head.
Aroma is loaded with coffee and a light lactose / mocha nose.
Taste is filled with roasted/torrefied coffee, light caramel malts with light bitter mouthfeel and finish. Possible hints of some dark fruits.
Overall this one is loaded with coffee. No abv indicated but the palate was warming.

The dude who was pouring this beer had never even heard of that song, can you believe that? Pours a deep black opaque colour with an enormous khaki head. Many different aromas, Hersheys chocolate, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. Flavors of chocolate milk and cofee as well as a little smoke. Nice tasting, just released brew, with two different labels. Im waiting for it to hit the shelves.
