Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

12 oz. bottle. Presentable mahogany brown doppelbock pour, thin collar of foam around edge. Big smell of lightly-roasted coffee. And a big coffee taste, with matching sweetness, like those coffee-flavored candies. Cherry and other fruit overtones make this more of a coffee cordial than a Kahlua. Nut roast bock malts in just the right proportion contribute much of the sweetness. I’m just liking this one a lot.

Somewhat hazy brown pour with off white head. The nose is roasted malt and touches of coffee. The flavor is sweet carmel malt, moderately bitter hop bite and substantial roasted coffee notes. Pretty decent beer.

12oz Bottle. Heavy caramel and toffee musk. A dusting of espresso powder and cologne. Nuanced. Lightly sweet and sweeping through the browns. Pours a rather ruddy brown, with a soapy edge in tan. Flavor charges through with a big malt profile, lots of sugars and light fruit, then a flash of coffee in the pan and it doesn’t really come together all that well. Malt plays shallow and the coffee is a little washed out. Finishes on a bright hop edge. Not as stunning as it should have been.

Pour is a dark red with no head. Aroma is some dark fruit with a bit of the coffee followed by some chocolate. Flavor is again some chocolate at first then comes some dark fruit then a small touch of the coffee. There are lots of things going on in this beer and each sip brings something different.

In the clear pour this is tangy molasses, ashy and smoky, not a bad dopplebock but thin. In the yeast pour there is more coffee, more body. A bit boozy and thin overall. Aroma contains woodiness and flowers, along with some sugar. Fair beer.

Clear chestnut with a small beige head. Coffee hits the nose first followed by some caramel malt, dough, chocolate, and brown sugar. Coffee dominates the flavor with the other aromatic elements singing back-up. Medium bodied. Not a true doppelbock in my opinion with the coffee all but masking the doppelbock characteristics. Still, a decent drink.

Draft at Radio Maria in Champaign, IL. Pours a deep black with a wisp of a head. Aroma of wet coffee grounds. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Flavor is very strong in dry, roasty coffee, with accents of nuts, peat, and chocolate. Moderate amount of residual sweetness, which works well to bring out the nuances. Very nice beer. Has a homebrew like quality to it.

Bottle at Chris´grill party. Pours brown with a tiny off-white head. Moderate sweetness with a light bitterness and light acidic - vinegarish notes. Malty aromas of molasses and coffee. Light herbal hops notes. Hints of leather and cask wood. Also hints of green pepper fruits. Medium bodied with a thin, oily mouthfeel. Softish carbonation. Bitter finish.
