Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Liquid Sunshine V. Very cool concept--they get some originality points for sure. 12-oz. Crystal clear medium rubied amber. No head. No lace. Big light-roast coffee bean nose. Creamy medium body, very low carb. The coffee dominates the mid-palate as well, but some caramel and nutty, woody notes emerge to balance it out.

(Bottle) Pours a dark brown color with a quickly dissipating tan head. Strong aroma of burnt grain and espresso. Lots of coffee in the taste. Cocoa, cream and unrefined dark sugar notes as well. Slightly astringent. Surprisingly drinkable, with the body being lighter than expected. Not something I’d like to drink every day, but pretty good regardless.

Bottle - Pours a dark black with hints of red. Almost no head. Very little lacing. Strong coffee aroma. Tastes of coffee and licorice. Nice lingering mouthfeel. Interesting beer. Not one of my personal Darkhorse favorites, but I appreciate its uniqueness. Never had a bad beer from this brewery.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The smell is very heavily coffee, malts, roasty, and some alcohol. The look is clear, light brown in color with a beige colored head. The taste is sweet, malts, roasty, and more coffee.

bottle courtesy of alexgash. Thanks!
Pours dark maroon with a large medium sized beige head. Smell is of sweet maltiness and nice strong coffee. Taste is about what I’d expect from the name. Rich and malty as expected from a dopplebock with a nice coffee flavor as well. Finishes more malty with little coffee flavor at the end. Pretty nice and drinkable. Medium to slightly rich body with good carbonation. Fairly noticeable tartness in the finish that detracted somewhat.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Cloudy brown colored with little head and lots of sediment apparent. Large coffee scent with some bitterness as well. Flavor is straight from the coffee pot. Tastes bitter but has nice flavorings. Very tasty.

12 ounce bottle. I did not know what to expect from this one... I am not a huge doppelbock fan but I like Dark Horse. Pours a cola-like brown color with a half finger width white head that disappears quickly. It also had a decent amount of carbonation. The aroma was a very pleasant mix of espresso coffee and sweet malts. I actually really enjoyed the aroma... the coffee smell deviated from the norm in my opinion. The taste was a very nice mix of coffee and sweet malt also. I will agree that it was a bit boring, but it was definitely tasty. It had a lighter mouth feel than I would have liked also. Overall though a very enjoyable beer. If you like coffee, give this one a whirl.

Walnut pour with a thin offwhite head. Aroma is pure coffee grounds and some roast. Flavor is a combination of nice malty bock flavor and some very intense coffee roast. A bit warm going down, I rather like this take on a doppelbock. It retains its relatively clean but deep maltiness and takes on a new intensity with the addition of coffee. Nice one Dark Horse
