Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Bottle: Courtesy of major0429...pours a cloudy amber with no head. This was very surprising...the coffee seems to hit right off the bat, some notes of caramel malt and a bit of brown sugar noted as well. Very coffee dominant flavor with dark malts, toffee and the brown sugar coming through nicely.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Acknud. Pours a cloudy mahogany color with a 1/2" off white head. Nose is coffee and caramel. Mouthfeel is a bit thin with an apprpriate amount of carbonation. The first few sips were strong coffee, but then the coffee flavor begins to lose its intensity and stays in the background while the caramel sweetness takes over. Good sipping brew, though I probably wouldn’t want more than one at a sitting.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a deep brown body and a small tan head. Aroma is strongly coffee, with metal and minerals. Taste as far as I can tell is just coffee, with some earth and maybe some candied pecans. Light bubbles.

Bottle: The nose showed off the coffee along with a mineral edge and overall was not as expressive as I was expecting. The palate was carbonated and refreshing showing off the flavors from the nose. In my opinion, this is a step down from the stout series from Dark Horse.

Bottle: Very interesting beer. Aroma and flavor of malt and coffee. Some nut aroma and flavor mixed in. Pretty good, but not something that I would drink a lot.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark, hazy caramel color with a light tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee beans backed up with caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is straight coffee again, with some caramel backup. Honestly, I’m not totally sold on the flavor combination, but it is a refreshing approach to the coffee beer, and I definitely applaud Dark Horse for that.

2 12 oz bottles shared at a beer tasting / monopoly game with my girlfriend and close friends. This brew was an interesting one. This brew pours a very nice. A very nice hazy brown, with barely a light shining through, with red notes mixed about. Head is nice and laces well. Aroma is powerful, coffee, but ground coffee, almost like the coffee aisle at Jewel-Osco. That kind of coffee. Taste is similar up front, masked by coffee largely, hiding a lot or any complexities there may be. A bit of a bitter finish, some hops or maybe just the coffee. Some light but potent darker roasted malts shine through in stages, that shine through touches of sweetness, almost like additives to a cup of coffee (Sweetener, etc.). Ligher side of medium bodied. Decent, not necessarily my think. I think the beer is good, but personally don’t like coffee masking my beers to hell.

It’s time for the perkulator-It’s time for the perkulator! The dude who was pouring this beer had never even heard of that song, can you believe that? Pours a deep black opaque colour with an enormous khaki head. Many different aromas, Hersheys chocolate, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. Flavors of chocolate milk and cofee as well as a little smoke. Nice tasting, just released brew, with two different labels. Im waiting for it to hit the shelves.
